After a successful takeover of the award-winning Commune by the Great Wall architectural collection near Beijing, owned by SOHO China, Kempinski will be entrusted with SOHO China’s development of a waterside village on Hainan Island, Boao Canal Village Kempinski, starting 1 November 2005.

Located on the eastern part of Hainan Island, some 2 hours by car from Sanya city and its airport, the entire 188,000 m2 terrain of the development is crisscrossed with rivers, streams and aqueducts. The relatively flat land, dotted with palms and lush tropical vegetation, has a total building space of 37,388 m2 reserved for 105 villas. A large network of waterways guarantees each villa in Boao Canal Village Kempinski a prime water front view. Kempinski will manage 98 of these villas and the remainder will be permanent residences. The nine different villa styles have been designed by architects Rocco Yim and Seung H-Sang, bearing in mind the area’s natural beauty and tropical climate.

The fresh, elegant interior design of the villas is distinguished with simple, clean lines and neutral colours, creating an uncluttered feel. Guests staying at the villas enjoy all the luxurious services for which Kempinski is renowned, from 24-hour private butler service to ‘room service’ and a lifestyle based around the waterways. A floating market, docks and gardens by the riverbanks are essential elements of this lifestyle.

A fine dining restaurant and an all day café with terrace are planned, while the seafood specialty restaurant overlooking the waterways has already opened. A swimming pool and tennis court are among the leisure activities possible within the village. Once completed, a planned Club House will also boast full conference and meeting facilities, further restaurants and a 1000 m2 spa.

Hainan Island itself is a region of rich natural resources and is surrounded by the clear waters of the South China Sea. The setting is ideal for the Boao Water City project, which will eventually include not only Boao Canal Village Kempinski, but a number of luxury hotels, several golf courses, a hot springs resort and a local government complex.

René Schmitt, Senior Vice President at Kempinski, shared his pleasure on signing this latest project; “China continues to be the scene of some of Kempinski’s strongest expansion in terms of room capacity and number of hotels. We are delighted to be working with Mr. Pan Shiyi and Mrs. Zhang Xin of SOHO China on another prestigious development. Hainan Island is a sunshine-filled leisure destination, where Kempinski will also be managing a stunning resort set on Sanya Bay, the Kempinski Hotel Sanya, opening end 2006.”
