Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest (JAUM) has recognized Carlson Board Chairman Marilyn Carlson Nelson as a Business Hall of Fame Laureate.
Nelson is among five Laureates recognized this week for their commitment to innovative business practices and community mindedness. Laureates serve as role models to JAUM participants, and were chosen based on their business excellence and dedication to the community, as well as demonstrated integrity, respect and excellence, according to JAUM.
“This recognition is very meaningful to me because I respect Junior Achievement’s accomplishments and its work with the youth of our communities,” Nelson said. “The organization provides the opportunity for volunteers to help young people learn about the entrepreneurial spirit and the building blocks of the free-enterprise system.”
Forbes magazine has regularly selected Nelson as one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” In 2006 she was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News and World Report, and in 2007 Ethisphere Magazine named her one of the “100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics.”
Nelson is on the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council and in 2004 co-chaired the Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. She recently completed a presidential appointment as chair of the National Women’s Business Council, an advisory council to the President and Congress, and is currently chair of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. She also is a member of the World Travel and Tourism Council and the Business Roundtable.
In October 2006, H.E. Jean-David Levitte, French Ambassador to the United States, inducted Nelson in the French Légion d’Honneur, an order created by Napoleon Bonaparte. The order recognizes citizens of France, and a select few others, for their exemplary leadership and service to humanity.
Outside of her industry, Nelson serves on the boards of Exxon Mobil Corporation, the Mayo Clinic Foundation, and the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy.
She is the author of “How We Lead Matters,” a book about her personal life and experiences, to be published by McGraw-Hill this autumn.
In addition to Nelson, who also served as Carlson’s chief executive officer until March 2008, the 2008 JAUM Laureates are: Otto Bremer, founder, Bremer Financial Corporation and the Otto Bremer Foundation; Stephen W. Sanger, chairman and former CEO, General Mills, Inc.; Hugh Schilling, chairman, former president and CEO, Horton Holding, Inc.; and Warren Staley, former CEO and chairman, Cargill, Inc.
