Mandarin Oriental To Open Luxury Resort And Spa On Hainan Island, China

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group today announced that it will manage an exclusive resort currently under development on China’s second largest island and most southern province, Hainan Island. The 292-room resort will open in the second half of 2006.
Mandarin Oriental, Sanya will appeal to sophisticated travellers in search of serenity and tranquility in the beautiful surroundings of this self proclaimed ‘Hawaii of China’. Located on a 12 hectare beachfront site on Dadonghai Bay, all guest rooms, suites and villas, as well as the public areas, will have expansive views over the South China Sea. The resort is approximately five minutes drive from Sanya City, and 20 kilometres from the city’s international airport.
With a larger than average room size of 55 square metres, most guest rooms will have direct access to the secluded beach, and will feature private gardens with timber decks and trellises. Fifteen 200sq m private villas and 23 oversized suites will be a prime feature of the resort, each with its own personal infinity edge pool, garden and relaxation pavilion, offering the ultimate in seclusion. The design of Mandarin Oriental, Sanya is based on an interpretation of contemporary northern Chinese architecture, with interiors that will incorporate delicate Asian touches together with a relaxed resort experience.
A variety of chic, innovative dining options are planned at each of the seven restaurants and bars, including a Chinese restaurant, a Seafood Grill, a Jazz Bar and an upscale Cigar Lounge. Many restaurants will offer outdoor venues.
Mandarin Oriental, Sanya will be the only resort in the area to offer banquet and conference facilities in an outdoor environment with expansive ocean views.
The 480 square metre grand ballroom with an impressive arrival area, will accommodate up to 300 guests and will feature the most advanced audio-visual technology. In addition there will be five well-equipped conference rooms, each with extensive pre-function courtyards and magnificent sea views.
The all-encompassing 3,200 square metre Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Sanya will establish new standards of well-being, offering rejuvenating experiences that soothe, restore and revitalize. An elevated, ‘floating’ reception area will be a significant design feature and guests will journey from a courtyard village to the treatment suites. Each of the ten private treatment villas will offer state-of-the-art heat and water experiences and outdoor gardens for relaxation, outdoor treatments or private yoga classes. Spa programmes will be guided by Mandarin Oriental’s experienced spa experts, who are thoroughly educated in wellness and dedicated to serving the individual needs of every client.
As with all Mandarin Oriental spas, the heritage of the Group is evident with the inclusion of exclusive mind-body-spirit rituals rooted in Asian custom. Other wellness facilities will include a fitness centre, beauty salon, and two tennis courts.
Mandarin Oriental, Sanya will also feature two landscaped infinity pools surrounded by lush vegetation and with direct access to the beach. Other leisure activities will include organised water sports such as snorkelling and scuba diving. In addition, the resort will encompass an upscale retail facility, fully equipped business centre, library, reading room, games room and dedicated children’s centre.

The developer of the project is Hainan New Superior Industry Company Limited. Chan Sau Yan Associates (CSYA) is the Singapore-based architect firm, while LTW DesignWorks will be responsible for the resort’s interior design. Bensley Design Studios, based in Bangkok has been appointed as landscape architects and resort planner.

Hainan Island is located at approximately the same latitude as Hawaii and is separated from the mainland by the Hainan Strait. It is China’s largest Special Economic Zone and is easily accessible, being just 50 minutes south of Hong Kong by air. Hainan offers an unprecedented leisure experience with plenty of year-round sunshine, cultural activities, excellent golf and watersports.
