FAIRMONT EXECUTIVE THOMAS KLEIN NAMED “MAN OF THE YEAR” AFTER RAISING $191,000 FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY OF THE GREATER SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
On June 5, 2010, Thomas Klein, regional vice president and general manager of The Fairmont San Francisco, was named “Man of The Year” by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for a record-breaking campaign that raised $191,000 – which can effectively fund more than three years of blood cancer research.
Klein was one of 15 candidates to participate in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 20th Annual “Man & Woman of The Year” campaign. Together, the candidates produced $803,000 for LLS funding as compared to $400,000 in 2009.
During the 10-week drive, Klein united the colleagues of The California Collection of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts with his family and friends to raise funds to support vital research for a cure and provide financial, educational and social services for individuals affected by blood cancer and their loved ones.
The Fairmont San Francisco; Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square; The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa; The Fairmont San Jose; The Fairmont Newport; and Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica each offered unique promotions within their communities to raise awareness about the disease and generate funds toward its cure.
“It was an amazing journey. Our team had the privilege of getting to know LLS Girl of The Year, Stella Jade Madsen, and her family. At the tender age of two and one-half years old, Stella was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia and, after spending half of her life on chemotherapy, she is now in remission. We were inspired by Stella’s strength and incredible spirit and will never forget this experience,” notes Klein.
He continues, “We have all seen too many lives cut short, too many families left devastated by cancer. We selected to work with LLS because blood cancer research can be the gateway to curing other forms of cancers. It will always be a joy to reflect on what we were able to accomplish to make a difference in the fight against cancer.”
