“While we have put great thought into the how the refreshed design showcases the splendour of the desert, our intention has been to do more than just give the lodge a bold new look,” say Jason King, &Beyond Regional Director Southern Africa. “We have also focused on refining our hospitality offering and adding a number of experiences that allow guests to come to understand and immerse themselves in the unique environment that surrounds them. We believe that we have created the ultimate desert escape.”

The selection of adventures available ranges far beyond the standard excursions and includes a number of opportunities for guests to immerse themselves in the splendour and mystery of &Beyond Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve, where the lodge is situated. These include the opportunity to explore some unique and unexpected landscapes, such as the iconic star dunes near the lodge, the only ones in Namibia situated on a private reserve.

Guests can set out on foot or by quad bike to enjoy a close-up experience of the living desert surrounding the lodge outside the confines of a vehicle. They can choose to spend time getting to grips with the unique ecology or to step back in time and visit San rock art sites to find out more about the area’s history and people. Fascinating geological excursions showcase the four different habitat types near the lodge, paying particular attention to ancient rock formations.

Desert drives that continue after nightfall reveal an array of unusual desert-adapted fauna and flora that thrives in the area while marvelling in the stark desert scenery. The exploration of the Namib Desert’s incredibly clear night skies can continue back at the lodge, which features a state-of-the-art observatory and telescope. With almost no impact from artificial light and on the best dark skies in the world, guests can discover the constellations of the southern sky under the guidance of a resident astronomer.

Special touches include details such as Swarovski binoculars in the guest suites and beautifully curated outdoor dining options, such as the delicious picnic breakfasts that await guests at the end of a guided walk.

Guests can also opt to spend some time exploring on their own, choosing from among various options of trails suitable for e-bikes or hikes. Guests keen on trying all the possibilities can even combine the two on a ‘bike and hike’ adventure.

A brand new gym and spa area are available should all the activities not be enough to calm guests’ energy, or if they require some pampering following a busy and active day. The food experience at the lodge is also firmly based on wellness, with a wide selection of fresh and healthy ingredients and creative cooking methods, from Hibachi grills to salt slabs. An updated wine cellar adds a touch of sheer indulgence to the dining experience.

Those guests inspired to take to the skies can book a scenic helicopter flight or a hot air ballooning experience. Delving deep into the desert, the helicopter soars over the vast expanses of the desert, delivering awe-inspiring views of landscapes that have remained unchanged for millions of years, while the balloon flight skims the edge of the dune field.

Most of the experience options at &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge are fully inclusive, however, wellness treatments, helicopter flights and hot air ballooning are at an additional cost.
