Founded in 1964, the AICR – the “Amicale Internationale des Sous Directeurs et Chefs de Réception des Grand Hôtels”, also known as the “International Association for Deputy Managers and Front Office Managers of Luxury Hotels” – has been awarding the “David Campbell Trophy” every year since 1995 and honors the best receptionists in the world with this internationally respected prize. Last Saturday, the title of “International Receptionist of the Year” went to an Austrian for the first time. Hotel Sacher Wien’s Nikola Farkas, who is only twenty-two years old, prevailed against 14 contenders from all over the world! “A good receptionist is a good listener and always remains authentic, I think”, says Farkas, who has been working for Hotel Sacher Wien since May 2018.

The AICR Congress, which took place from February 5 to 9 in Warsaw this year, provided the setting for the international competition of top receptionists. Farkas had secured his entry by winning the Austrian preliminary round in November 2019. He excelled right from the first part of the competition and proved his knowledge of the hotel industry in a written test. The highlight of the competition was a role-play: The seven-member jury was particularly impressed by his calm and friendly manner, as well as the charming and courteous approach with which he mastered all the tasks set for him effortlessly. How had he prepared for the competition? “It’s my daily work; I know from practice that you can’t prepare for it because every guest is different!” After Farkas, Maude Pretre from Shangri-La Hotel, Paris, took second place followed by Debotri Chaudhuri from InterContinental, Adelaide, in third place.

Back in Vienna, Farkas is overjoyed at his victory. “It’s such a great honor to represent my profession to the world for a year from now!” The whole Sacher family is delighted for him. “We are incredibly proud of Nikola, who has shown what great things can be achieved at such a young age. Personalities like Nikola are exceptionally valuable – not just for Sacher, but for the entire hotel industry!”, Sacher hotel director Reiner Heilmann comments proudly.
