Flex-Staffing, Diversity Initiatives and English-Language Training Program Praised

Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) has been recognized for its childcare offerings, flexible work options, diversity initiatives and English-language training program by Working Mother magazine, who included the company in its “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers.” Marriott has been named to this list 16 times, earning the company a place on Working Mother’s Hall of Fame. Companies are selected based on the quality of their workforce, compensation, child-care, flexibility programs, leave policies, family-friendly programs and culture.

Erica Qualls, general manager of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, the company’s third-largest hotel with more than 1,600 rooms, said, “I’ve had incredible mentors at Marriott who believed in me, and I’ve learned that it’s critical to have coaches who will help you along.” A proud mother of four children, Qualls began her career with Marriott 14 years ago as a telephone operator and has held a variety of positions along the way.

This year, the magazine highlighted Marriott’s unique Flex Staffing department, a temporary services project group for salaried and hourly associates who are interested in taking career breaks, but who wish to stay current with project work. Flex Staffing associates have ultimate control over their schedules, the types of projects they pick up and the length of those projects.

Also noted was Marriott’s Board of Directors’ Committee for Excellence which meets regularly to set diversity objectives and monitor progress at every level of the corporation. It works to increase the inclusion of women and men of all races and ethnicities throughout the company.

The company was also praised for its use of Sed de SaberTM, a handheld device that uses storytelling, voice recording, games and review exercises to enhance the English language skills of Spanish-speaking employees. Results have shown that 85 percent of participants gained in English language proficiency.

“Marriott recognizes that taking care of its associates, many of whom are working parents, is the key to the success of the company,” said David Rodriguez, executive vice president of global human resources. “It is essential that Marriott has family-friendly benefits and programs in place that help create a work environment that enables associates to manage their responsibilities between work and home while they continue to advance in their careers.”
