As the crew welcomed us aboard the water shuttle, I was already sinking into the surrounding quiet luxury. This is no Staten Island ferry crossing. The experience starts here. As we glided through Lake Lucerne, through the light fog, one could feel transported to another dimension – quiet, natural, and enchanting. Suddenly, at a turn, it appeared: the funicular station that was to lead us to our final destination half a kilometre higher. Welcomed by a helpful and smiley “cabin crew”, I naturally sat in the front row of the first car to absorb it all, and the bright red funicular – marriage of heritage and modernity – slowly ascended the mountain, with each turn, revealing increasingly spectacular vistas. Finally, the resort emerged, majestically set against the dramatic Alpine backdrop. As I’m escorted to the entrance, I know I'm embarking on a remarkable journey before even setting foot in the lobby.
Elegantly dressed in their uniform, adorned with hand-embroidered lilium martagon, the teams play in unison to provide a smooth and elevated experience. Their natural warmth and attentiveness create a welcoming atmosphere, making the grandeur feel constantly cosy and familiar. From helping me with directions – I get easily lost in lifts – to finding a window seat for breakfast – a must! – or guiding me through menus, everything was easy.
The 700+ team members at the Bürgenstock Lake Lucerne, led by General Manager Chris K. Franzen, have mastered anticipatory service that never feels intrusive. This affirms their dedication to the iconic property and Swiss hospitality at its finest, ultimately earning numerous distinctions and a soft spot in many loyal guests’ hearts.
A tale of reinvention
The Bürgenstock’s commanding position 500 metres above Lake Lucerne is breathtaking, but the seamless fusion of Belle Époque grandeur with sleek contemporary design is also part of the experience. Opened in 1873 by Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer, the hotel is to this day a testament to showcasing the founders' innovative spirit; one of the most striking is the electric funicular, previously mentioned, constructed in 1888 – the world's first.
Originally known as the Palace Hotel, it was joined in 2017 by the contemporary building to create the current Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne under the direction of the now deceased Bruno H. Schöpfer, who was then managing director of Katara Hospitality Switzerland AG. Today, it is a complex spanning over 60 hectares and housing four hotels with 383 rooms and suites, 12 restaurants and bars, 67 residential suites, a 10,000 m² Alpine spa, a nine-hole golf course and three tennis courts.
These fusions of areas and styles are part of a destination with stories to tell, and each corridor is a deep dive into the property's rich history. As I strolled the vast property and ventured along the historic Promenade, I could almost hear the footsteps of luminaries who once graced these halls. Quickly after its opening, the resort became the playground of Europe's elite. Audrey Hepburn married Mel Ferrer in the resort's charming chapel; Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti made it their home for years, inhabited The Villa Daniel for 13 years; Charlie Chaplin was a regular.
Over the years, state events, prestigious gatherings, and celebrities seeking intimacy and a place to recharge have rewarded The Bürgenstock Lake Lucerne with a prestigious reputation. Outside the hotels, their museum-like display and extensive shopping gallery, the grounds are also worth exploring. With a view of local farms and hiking paths into the mountain, it’s easy to complete the health journey with fresh air and reconnection with nature.
Rooms with a view on nature
Set within the former Palace Hotel, now called The Heritage, my third-floor room was my viewpoint over Lake Lucerne's ever-changing moods. This is no ordinary hotel room with a view; it's a front-row seat to nature's daily performance, with Lucerne's twinkling lights providing a distant supporting act. My Deluxe room’s large windows framed the panorama beautifully, and I enjoyed the mist dancing across the water every morning.
Inside, the blend of history and contemporary aesthetics unfolds once again. Mirror-fronted wardrobes hide both expected and surprising treasures – a digital safe sits companionably next to an umbrella and a shoe-polishing box, reminiscent of an atemporal elegance.
Was it the mountain air? The perfect darkness courtesy of electronic shutters? The pillow menu that would satisfy even the fussiest of sleepers? The sleeping area centres around a bed that creates restful nights, aligned with the resort's relaxing atmosphere. Though not extravagant, the bathroom speaks the same thoughtful language: textured dark walls, black ceramic tiles, and Acqua di Parma toiletries to complement the offer.
Culinary Journeys without leaving the mountain
Right from the first evening, I discovered that the Bürgenstock also garnered a comprehensive gastronomic destination that rivals the best in Europe. With eight distinct restaurants and bars, each meal became its own event, an opportunity to embark on a new flavour journey.
For my first dinner, I dined at Spices Kitchen & Terrace, where authentic flavours from Japan, China, India, and Thailand are served against those mesmerising lake views. I gravitated toward a selection of Indian and Thai starters and mains – each dish speaking its own dialect of spice and complexity with impressive authenticity.
By morning, this space transforms into a breakfast sanctuary, where floor-to-ceiling glass panels reveal a magnificent 180° panorama of lake and mountains. There's something rather special about starting your day with such visual splendour while savouring perfectly executed French pancakes, artisanal breads, fresh fruits, and delicate slices of salmon. The view competes with the plate for attention – a delightful morning dilemma.
The Lakeview Bar & Lounge became my favourite retreat for lunch and dinner. Midday brought a plate of truffle linguine that struck the perfect balance between indulgence and refinement. One evening, I surrendered to the wagyu burger – an elevated take on comfort food that reminds you why specific classics never disappear from menus. They simply evolve.
Another famous restaurant, hidden behind a classic ballroom, is Ritzcoffier, the French brasserie honouring Escoffier and César Ritz cuisine. The room, with its copper pots hanging and photos of known chefs, is an homage to gastronomy in 19th-century style with updated flavours. A dedicated book, “Seven Kitchens,” takes foodies through the resort's culinary journey.
The Alpine Wellness Haven
If there's a crown jewel in the Bürgenstock's already impressive offering, it must surely be the spa facility – an astounding cathedral to wellness that left me quite speechless. From the pools, saline floating baths, resting paces, and healthy snacks to the attentive teams and carefully crafted scents and sounds, every detail is designed to connect the mind and body.
Guided by Maggie Derblay, Area Director of Spa, Wellness & Recreation of The Bürgenstock Collection, whose passion for authentic wellness experiences is infectious, I discovered an extraordinary range of facilities that seamlessly blend Alpine traditions with contemporary innovation. The Instagram-famous infinity pool has justifiably achieved iconic status – suspended over the lake with mountains framing the view, it's the sort of place that makes you question whether you've somehow slipped into a carefully edited social media fantasy. The feeling of floating in the clouds is very much real and exhilarating.
What sets this spa apart is its scale, dramatic setting, and thoughtfully designed wellness journeys: Activate, Regenerate, and Relax – each offering experiences tailored to different needs and time constraints. Derblay emphasised as she showed me the hidden ecological cold plunge pool, a natural basin drawing water directly from Lake Lucerne. "It's a lifestyle we aim to foster long after guests leave."
As I hurried to catch the sunset from the infinity pool, I was excited about the next day and the Regenerate programme that immediately seduced me. Between the hot, the cold, the moments of relaxation, and the moments designed to push one's temperature limits, the two-hour hydrothermal journey is everything it promises.
Longing for more
On my final morning, as the sun was once again shining on a cold day, I found myself on the shuttle boat, admiring the surrounding mountains and the resort, which was getting smaller and smaller in the distance. The peaceful lake offered a welcome, slow transition back to civilisation.
The Bürgenstock certainly offers luxury accommodations and world-class amenities, but one will mostly remember the transformative escape from the everyday they’re gifted with. As we’re all trying to redefine luxury, it is evident that luxury hotels are not places to stay, but portals to new experiences, new perspectives, and perhaps even new versions of ourselves.
