Leung selects Stoney Vineyard's Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Tasmania as Private Label partner

Jereme Leung, the visionary Chef Proprietor of Whampoa Club at Three on the Bund, continues to blaze new trails in his culinary journey with the creation of his own private wine label, believed to be the first such venture to be inaugurated by a Chinese chef.

The collection - Jereme Leung/ Stoney Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Tasmania - was created in partnership with Tasmanian winery, Domaine A/Stoney Vineyard and was chosen specifically to complement the culinary world of Whampoa Club.

Peter Althaus, owner of Stoney Vineyard says: “The wine we have jointly created is ripe and medium-bodied, with distinctly Bordeaux-like aromas and flavors, making it good to drink now. However it is destined for improvement over the next five to eight years”.

The first 600 bottles of the wine, priced at RMB 788 per bottle, were delivered to Leung’s Whampoa Club restaurants in Shanghai and Beijing this month.

The two partners expect to launch a white wine label next year.

Stoney Vineyard is best known in the international market through its Domaine A wines.

Leung became aware of the award winning vineyard through a chance meeting with members of the Tasmanian government, and has since become a staunch and enthusiastic champion of the Australian state’s excellent produce.

He acknowledges his particular interest in Stoney Vineyard through his personal preference for New World wines. “They are just as varied and interesting as wines from the Old World and tend to pair very well with food from the New World,” he says, adding that, in his opinion, “I have found that New World wineries, in general, are more flexible and open to trying new ideas”.
