With a vision to add zest and zeal to the lives of passionate Whisky drinkers in Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa recently launched its very own exclusive “Whisky Club” at the resort’s Borneo Lounge and Bar. The event was co-sponsored by Riche Monde, Asiaeuro, Maxxium and Diageo.

The essence of the resort’s “Whisky Club” was to give its members the opportunity to nurture their knowledge of fine whiskies, get special discounts on whiskies, attend whisky presentations and be expertly introduced to world-class bourbons and whiskies.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of a four-and-a-half litre bottle of The Macallan to Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa’s “Whisky Club” by Mr. Ivan Ong, marketing director of Maxxium Marketing, while the resort’s “Whisky Club” presented the Glen Grant 1958 to members.

Glen Grant 1958 is an old whisky distilled by Glen Grant, a distillery in the town of Rothes in Speyside, Scotland. This rich whisky has complex flavours of sweet sherry and hints of apples and pears.

The evening also revealed a kaleidoscopic journey for all invited guests where they got to savour the great backbone taste of Whyte & Mackay’s 13-year-old blended Scotch whisky. This special whisky is known for its polished and elegant smell, where the spirit rises gently to reveal its long age in wood. Some round sherry wood tones are also apparent, giving it a distinguished graceful smoothness.

Whisky Club members also got to taste the aromatic Glenmorangie malt whisky, which is well-known among whisky connoisseurs as a liquid catalyst that ignites and illuminates all senses of its drinkers.

The Famous Grouse Malt Whisky (18 years), Highland Park Single Malt Whisky (18 Years), Maker’s Mark Bourbon and many other premium whiskies to be paired with some dishes specially created for the evening were also served to the “Whisky Club” members during the event.

Susy Thomas, a songwriter-singer from London, entertained members with her soulful music throughout the evening. She has been all over the world during her musical career and has worked with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Michael Kamen and Lestyn Polson. She has also spent time writing and recording in the USA.

Prime whiskies, sumptuous food and awe-inspiring entertainment – these were all offered to the members of Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa’s exclusive Whisky Club.
