Amanresorts enters the Caribbean region

Marking Amanresorts' entry to the Caribbean region, Amanyara opened 1 March, 2006, welcoming its first guests. Open to the elements - the sun and its reflections off the water, the sights and sounds of the ocean - Amanyara is spacious and dramatic yet intimate, with cosy areas in which to retreat. Deriving its name from a combination of the Sanskrit word for peace, 'aman' and 'yara', the word for place in the language of the Arawak Amerindians, one of the region's pre-Columbian indigenous peoples, the 40 suite resort enjoys a pristine location on the secluded west coast of North West Point, a 20-minute drive from Providenciales International Airport.

Entry to the resort is through a large reception pavilion that opens onto a grand formal reflecting pool, landscaped with mature trees and framed by the Library, Bar and Restaurant. The circular Bar offers a dramatic soaring roof and sea views, and is fronted by a 164 ft (50m) swimming pool and sundeck. The Restaurant provides a choice of alfresco or air-conditioned settings, both with views. The cuisine provides a selection of Asian and Mediterranean fare with an emphasis on local seafood.

All 40 timber shingled pavilions are identical in layout and design, sited either on the edge of tranquil ponds or nestled in the vegetation along the oceanfront, elevated above the waterline. A dramatic overhanging roofline creates shaded outdoor areas on the pavilions' three terraces which are accessible through large glass doors that open to catch the cooling sea breezes.

Arrival to a pavilion is by an entrance terrace that houses two daybeds. The room's interior features a central king-size bed behind which sits a writing desk and chair. Beyond, a cabinet contains a mini bar with complimentary refreshments and a safe. Positioned in the corners of the room are a reading chair with a footstool and an entertainment console with television, DVD player and surround sound system.

The bedroom/living room opens onto two more terraces, the first with banquettes for lounging or dining and the second with a sunken table with cushions and bolsters and two sunning mats. The bathroom area is separated from the room by a decorative wooden screen and features a free-standing bathtub with an adjacent ottoman, twin vanities, a shower room and separate toilet, as well as an adjacent dressing area with hanging and storage space. Pavilions incorporate a simple palette of materials and colours: the floor is a sand-polished terrazzo with teak inlays and sisal matting is used in the bathroom.

Endowed with clear turquoise waters and white sand beaches, the Turks and Caicos is a destination for beach and water sports enthusiasts. With the pristine reefs of the Northwest Point Marine National Park only 180m directly offshore, some of the world's best scuba diving is immediately accessible. The Amanyara Dive Centre offers a range of courses suitable for beginners and experienced divers alike. Snorkelling from Amanyara's beach proves remarkable, with the sandy bottom declining gradually out to the reef walls, which fall away to a depth of 2,100m. Home to Boulder Star coral, Elkhorn coral and gorgonians of various species, the five mile long fringing reef system supports a wide variety of fish from groupers and surgeonfish to angel fish, spotted eagle rays and turtles.

Amanyara's Beach Club provides a variety of water sports equipment from Hobie cats to ocean kayaks. Two, flood-lit tennis courts are located next to the Fitness Centre, available by 15 May. Spa treatments and massages can be enjoyed in the privacy of guest suites with Amanyara's team of skilled therapists. Charters for game fishing or a round of golf at Providenciales Golf Club, rated among the Caribbean's top 10 courses, can also be arranged. Rates are inclusive of all airport transfers, non-motorised water sports, use of tennis courts and equipment, laundry, mini bar (except spirits) and all telephone calls.
