The current holder of the Best Sommelier of the World award, Andreas Larsson, recently spent a day with Catherine Corbeau-Mellot and her team discovering some of the treasures from the Central Loire. Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé, Ménetou Salon, Quincy, Reuilly, Pouilly sur Loire… the appellations the Swedish sommelier, Andreas Larsson, appreciated while discovering the diversity of the terroirs from Vignobles Joseph Mellot and getting a first impression of the 2009 vintage.

In front of French TV cameras, Catherine Corbeau-Mellot thanked Andreas Larsson for his visit: “We are honoured to receive the Best Sommelier of the World at the end of the exceptional 2009 harvest. Andreas Larsson’s visit, as well as the recent excellent reviews of our wines in Wine Spectator and from French experts Bettane & Desseauve, are a reward for the regularity and rigour in our work. Already appreciated by a great number of enthusiasts, our wines are available now in most of the great restaurants in the world.”

Two important moments punctuated this visit. First of all, a vertical tasting of the Sancerre wine “Les Vignes du Rocher” which carried a particularly strong emotional aspect. It showed the power, the complexity and the aptitude for a long ageing of this wine coming from an exceptional flint soil. Then, a visit to Quincy to taste the wines from Jean Michel Sorbe and Pierre Duret, two domains Joseph Mellot owns for more than ten years. With these two estates, situated at the top of their appellation, Andreas Larsson appreciated the minerality and the elegance expressed in wines which show “the true values of the soil”.

Andreas Larsson’s comments on selected wines from the 2008 vintage:

Menetou Salon Clos du Pressoir 2008 : « The Menetou Salon appellation is not as widely recognized as Sancerre or Pouilly Fumé, but it has a few wines that are of very nice quality. Aromatically, this wine displays the same kind of notes that we find in Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, very much on the floral side, with similar hints of citrus. It is still very youthful and vibrant with underlining minerality. The palate is showing a very nice freshness, very vibrant fruit and a fairly long finish. »

Sancerre La Chatellenie 2008 : « 2008 is a wonderful vintage because it displays a very nice ripeness of fruit. It doesn’t have the green aromas that you find in some wines. It is more focused on minerality and stony notes with hints of fresh almonds and hazelnuts. It is very interesting. The palate is still youthful and vibrant. It has a very nice ripe, juicy acidity. A long and very mineral finish. »

Pouilly Fumé Le Troncsec 2008 : « Another example which I really like at Joseph Mellot. Completely different to Sancerre because of the different terroirs. On the nose, it is displaying ripeness with stone fruits rather than yellow fruits. Very nice level of ripeness with stony, mineral notes. The palate displays a really nice salty mineral finish. It actually has greater length than the Sancerre. A very nice wine. »
