The 2011 Guide, enriched and expanded by the vision of Jaume Tàpies, International President of Relais & Châteaux, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and ushers in an auspicious new decade for an association which brings together almost 500 exceptional properties from across the planet, joined this year by a record number of 36 new members in 6 new destinations (Estonia, Peru, Chile, Laos, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu) and 6 new cities (Washington DC, San Diego, Shanghai, Kobe, and Casablanca).
They all share the same values of authenticity and seek to meet the same exacting demand to be all around the world, unique in the world. 780,000 copies of this famous white book, with its emblematic golden fleur de lys stamped on the cover, in 6 languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and, for the first time, Mandarin), with 700 pages in colour, have been distributed in 60 countries. This represents an extraordinary invitation to travel, following an introduction by Richard Gere, Relais & Châteaux Ambassador for 2011 and himself an innkeeper of a new member hotel, the Bedford Post.
The Guide highlights the 12 new award-winners of the “Trophies”, presented annually as a mark of appreciation of excellence in a range of fields.
Tribute is also paid to the Grand Chefs Relais & Châteaux, a prestigious award recognizing worldwide excellence in the culinary arts. For 2011, there are eight extraordinary chefs who have won their place on this honour roll.
