Vancouver’s premiere luxury waterfront hotel is celebrating 25 years of perfecting personalized experiences. The landmark hotel was built to celebrate Expo ’86 in Vancouver’s centennial year. A quarter of a century later, the Pan Pacific Vancouver has welcomed thousands of guests from around the world and is firmly established as one of Vancouver’s preeminent hotels.

“The Pan Pacific Vancouver opened its doors to the world arriving to experience Expo ’86,” says Tim Tindle, General Manager of the Pan Pacific Vancouver. “Through the years we have met many milestones including the incredible Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In the end though, it is about the people. Our associates strive to provide the best service possible, day in and day out to our guests.”

Out of 429 employees, the Pan Pacific Vancouver had 21 employees celebrate 25 years of service, and 21 employees celebrate 20 years of service, at the end of 2010. There are another 17 employees celebrating 25 years, and eight celebrating 20 years, in the year 2011. These numbers illustrate a commitment to service and a work culture that deeply cares about their employees.

Duty manager Carolyn Mason is grateful to have worked with so many outstanding hoteliers over the last 25 years. She also has some fond memories of guests she has dealt with over the years.

“I was hired on in October of 1985, before the hotel’s opening in January 1986,” says Mason. “One of my most thrilling memories is from when I escorted Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales up to their room after the ribbon-cutting for the opening ceremonies of Expo in May, 1986.”

Although Mason had been instructed to not look at the royal couple, she did manage to sneak a peek at the princess’ gown. Another memory from that momentous stay was the following night when Diana requested special permission to go for a swim in the outdoor pool located on the hotel’s 8th floor at 3am.

Many notable guests have made themselves at home at the Pan Pacific Vancouver. Sean Connery went as far as attending one of the front desk’s “three minute meetings,” between shift changes, while Robin Williams made use of the staff elevators to avoid causing a scene in the main lobby area. Upon making a wrong turn and ending up in the employee lunchroom, Williams launched into an impromptu comedy routine to the delight of the associates lunching there.

Other famous guests that have enjoyed the Pan Pacific Vancouver’s tremendous views and waterfront location are Bill Clinton, the Agha Khan, Boris Yeltsin and the Dalai Lama.

“Regardless of whether I am dealing with famous people or not, they are my guest,” says Mason. “We always strive to wow the guest. You see how making a difference in someone’s stay or going above and beyond affects guests and it inspires you to continue making the extra effort.”
