Last gold leaf applied to iconic gold cupolas as Macau’s biggest opening of 2011 draws nearer
Galaxy Entertainment Group (“GEG” or “the Group” – HKEx stock code: 00027) executives recently commemorated the topping-out of Galaxy Macau™, the newest integrated destination resort in the Cotai entertainment area, as the last piece of real gold leaf was applied to one of the cupolas adorning the property’s towers. The applying of gold leaf to the cupola signified the completion of the property’s exterior and the commencement of the countdown toward its final unveiling in early 2011.
“This is one of the most significant moments to date for Galaxy Macau,” said Mr. Francis Lui, Deputy Chairman of GEG. “Galaxy Macau is going to be a trendsetter in the local leisure and tourism scene because it is the first true integrated destination resort of its kind—one built by Asians, for Asians as well as those who want to experience the absolute best in Asian offerings and hospitality. Galaxy Macau also provides a leisure getaway with features unlike anything that currently exists in the city, and as such we believe it will help lead the further evolution of Macau tourism.”
The golden cupolas, which also inspire the property’s logo, are instantly recognizable symbols of Galaxy Macau and tower above Cotai, the city’s hottest leisure and entertainment district. Twenty-four-carat gold leaf was used to cover all six cupolas, four of which measure 15.2 meters high by 12.1 meters wide and two of which are a massive 24m by 17m. The amount of gold leaf used would be enough to cover the area of 87 football pitches. The cupolas themselves were designed to convey palatial splendor, and examples of them can be found in architecture around the world, further communicating the property’s “World Class, Asian Heart” hospitality ethos.
The 550,000-square-meter Galaxy Macau is considered the world’s first “Asian” resort destination because of its focus on Asian hospitality, tastes, sensibilities and design influences. It is intended to attract visitors from around the region as well as international guests seeking an authentic Asian resort holiday experience. Accommodation is provided by three leading Asian hotel brands: the Banyan Tree Macau, which will offer 246 suites and 10 floating villas; the 488-room Hotel Okura Macau; and the 1,500-room Galaxy Hotel, which will become GEG’s flagship Cotai hotel. Galaxy Macau marks the entry into the Macau market for both the Singapore-based Banyan Tree and Okura, Japan’s most prominent hotel company.
At a total investment of HK$14.9 billion, Galaxy Macau offers a number of game-changing features and amenities. Most prominent of these is the property’s resort deck, where a man-made beach—with 350 tons of white sand deposited along a 150-meter-long shoreline—frames the world’s largest rooftop wave pool, covering 4,000 square meters with waves reaching as high as 1.5 meters.
Galaxy Macau will offer one of the largest selections of Pan-Asian cuisine in the region, including a wide range of Chinese ethnic cuisines, and a retail boulevard offering a unique shopping experience of Asian as well as international brands. Also attracting visitors will be the ultra-exclusive China Rouge, a hybrid nightclub, bar and restaurant conceptualized by renowned Hong Kong designer Alan Chan to evoke a modern vision of 1930s Shanghai. It is anticipated that China Rouge will instantly become one of the trendiest nightspots in Macau, drawing discerning clientele from around the region.
The topping-out ceremony was celebrated by several Galaxy Macau executives on the roof of one of the property’s towers, underneath a golden cupola. Mr Lui and Michael Mecca, President and Chief Operating Officer of GEG, opened bottles of Champagne to commemorate the event and toast the coming arrival of Macau’s newest and most unique attraction.
