Lead Industry in Low Carbon Emission Efforts with its Commitments in Sustainable Business Practices
Melco International Development Limited (“Melco” or the “Group”, HKEx Code: 200) today proudly announced that it has become the first leisure and entertainment company to receive the CarbonCare® Champion Gold Label
awarded by CarbonCare Asia (CCA). This top honor recognizes Melco’s 100% carbon neutral status through a series of carbon reduction measures in its head office.
To create a Carbon-Neutral Office, Melco has taken a number of green initiatives such as auto-switch-off of lights, soya ink printing, use of FSC-certified paper, as well as recycling of waste paper, plastic bottles and metal containers. Melco also participated in an internationally certified carbon offset project called “Afforestation and Reforestation on Degraded Lands in Northwest Sichuan”. With Melco’s support, this carbon offset project advances the protection of the natural habitat of diverse wildlife species in the reserve. The project also creates job opportunities for more than 12,000 local farmers, including more than 5,300 of ethnic minorities.
CCA is a professional body of recognized carbon management expertise. Its Executive Director, Dr. Trini Leung, commented, “We applaud Melco’s efforts in pushing forward its sustainability mission by taking carbon neutrality actions and contributing to meaningful carbon reduction projects. Melco Group has taken significant groundbreaking steps in achieving carbon neutral status, and its participation in the Northern Sichuan project helps offer a living to impoverished communities and protect endangered giant pandas at the same time.”
Melco Group, led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Lawrence Ho, has always considered protecting the environment as one of its three core corporate social responsibility pillars. In addition to signing the carbon reduction charter and becoming a “Carbon Audit Green Partner” with the Environmental Protection Department, Melco Group also promotes green living in the communities by collaborating with NGOs. Melco has supported WWF’s Corporate Membership Programme for six consecutive years.
About the CarbonCare® Label scheme
The CarbonCare® Label scheme is based on its CarbonCare® Label Protocol, which incorporates the best international guidelines and practices in the areas of measuring and monitoring GHG emissions, i.e. the GHG Protocol, ISO14064-1 and PAS2060. Melco Group has been awarded a CarbonCare® Champion Gold Label, which means that it has achieved
net zero carbon emissions (carbon neutrality). Carbon neutrality refers to achieving net zero emissions by balancing an entity’s measured amount of carbon footprint with an equivalent amount of carbon reduction and offsets.
