In response to reader demand, Michelin has published its first Green Guide to the Pays de la Loire

With the support of the Pays de La Loire region, the Michelin guide editors – all travel experts – have searched the region up and down looking for interesting and original sites for their readers. The guide reflects the region's sustained focus on enhancing its tourist infrastructure, with a growing number of cycling routes and the development of the Loire estuary, and features the many artistic treasures of Nantes, Angers and other leading cities.

The MICHELIN Pays de la Loire Green Guide is divided into ten micro-regions, with two in each department: Vendée, Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne and Sarthe. This division allows readers to plan several short stays in the region.

On the inside front cover, readers can see the micro-regions in a glance with a selection of the most beautiful sights, each rated from one to three stars (“interesting”, “worth a detour” and “worth the trip”). A Michelin hallmark, the stars are determined according to clearly defined criteria and awarded in complete independence by the guides’ authors. These universal criteria focus in particular on the site’s historical or cultural importance, as well as its beauty and the pleasantness of the visit.

One of the sites to receive a higher rating in this edition of the guide is the Fontevraud Abbey, which was awarded a third star following a remarkable site enhancement program. Other featured attractions include Nantes (one star) the Nantes-Saint-Nazaire estuary art circuit (two stars), the Nantes-Brest Canal (one star) and the Terra Botanica garden in Angers (one star).

The guide contains three sections:

Organizing the trip, which provides useful information for both before and during the trip, with local holidays, festivals, and recreational activities.

Understanding the destination, which focuses on traditions, trades and dishes that are specific to the region as well as on its history and architecture.

Discovering the destination, which explores the different micro-regions, including detailed itineraries, and provides a very well-furnished list of restaurants, overnight accommodations, shops and leisure activities, organized by price so that all travelers will find something to suit their budget.
