The grand entry with its vaulted ceilings and elongated corridor—ironically reminiscent of a fashion runway—creates a sense of arrival for guests as they pass through the reception area, thoughtfully appointed with hat-making machinery repurposed as custom art installations. The 197 guest rooms, designed to reflect an industrial-chic aesthetic, feature a neutral colour palette of rich chocolate browns and bright whites and incorporate various materials from textural wool to buttery leather. In addition, the spirit of craftsmanship associated with the hotel is evident through the one-of-kind furniture creations from the sewing machine-inspired desks to the coffee tables modelled after factory carts.

When guests are not out catching a Broadway show in the nearby Theater District or strolling through Bryant Park, they can still experience the city’s landmarks but without even having to leave the comforts of the hotel. A sprawling terrace offering breath-taking views of the Empire State Building is accessible during anytime of the year, thanks in part to the retractable roof. This 3,500 square-foot public space featuring fountain and fireplace, the ultimate amenities for indoor-outdoor living, can also be reserved for private events.

A visit to The Refinery would not be complete without sampling the whimsical concoctions served in the prohibition-style “tea” parlour. Winnie’s Tea Lounge is an intimate boîte named after Winifred T. McDonald, the baroness who ran the millinery’s original tea room, and favourite haunt of weary Fifth Avenue shoppers. There is no doubt that history will once again repeat itself when The Refinery Hotel opens its doors on May 15, 2013.
