Foreword by H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco

In 1863, the inauguration of a Casino in Monaco represent the first founding act of the “Société des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers”. This symbolic establishment is part of the magnificent human and architectural heritage of Monte-Carlo SBM, profoundly intertwined with the very heart of the Principality’s history. Monte-Carlo SBM must primarily pay tribute to the creativity and perseverance of the Monaco princely family who throughout the centuries has always ensured the balance and expansion of the Principality.

« 150 ans » traces vision Prince Charles III had for his country, a vision that brought forth an extraordinary adventure under the leadership of one man, François Blanc.

Throughout the pages, filled with exclusive and unpublished archive photos and texts, the reader is led through the company’s history, its strong link with the economic development of the Principality, its role as Monte-Carlo’s urbanisation and development contributor, while simultaneously creating significant artistic events.

Six chapters to enter into the dream

Created as a « concept-book », published as a limited edition by « Histoire d’Entreprises » Editions, as much a history book as a cultural reference, the volume commemorating the 150 years of Monte-Carlo SBM tells the story of the vision and adventure of its founder François Blanc. His destiny, defying all odds, is subjected to scrutiny, allowing the reader to grasp the audacity and pragmatism of this leader and captain of modern leisure industry.

The story reveals the strength of his vision by applying text as an aid to understanding a very particular time: the pioneer years, the period when founding companies as we know it today was created, inviting the reader on an inspiring stroll throughout the S.B.M great landmarks– the Casino,Hôtel de Paris, Hôtel Hermitage, The Monte-Carlo Beach, The Sporting Club, The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, The Opera, The Sporting d’Hiver, The Thermes Marins.

The book also shares the stories of some of the personalities who have marked the history of Monte-Carlo, such as La Belle Otero, Winston Churchill, Colette, Sarah Bernhardt, Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker…

The book also narrates the heritage highlighted by the S.B.M.: arts, architecture, music, and especially cinema, an art inspired over the years by its sumptuous decors. The volume brings to light hidden treasures stored in Monte-Carlo S.B.M archives who has been preserving and enhancing this rare and diverse heritage since 1979: snapshots dating from 1900 to the present day, some from Man Ray, signed lithographed posters from amongst others Raymond Gid, Frédéric Hugo d’Alesi, Jean Cocteau, Sem, JeanGabriel Domergue, an exceptional selection of costumes, architectural sketches, including those penned by Charles Garnier… As many milestones allowing visitors to navigate throughout the history of art in the XXth century. Not to mention the very special relationship between the S.B.M. and the world of sports.

« De main de maître » (that masterly touch) chapter shows the history of crafts and the “behind-thescenes” of the company highlighted through beautiful snapshots preciously preserved over the years, and by the work of a contemporary photographer Philippe Scorpioni, porter at the Hôtel de Paris and passionate about photography, who brings a unique inside gaze to the work of his peers.

Finally, a collection of original works by Italian artist Gea Casolaro reminds us that a stroll through MonteCarlo is an invitation to step into a dream, a bridge between past and present.

« The corporate roots of Monte-Carlo SBM are set deep in the heart of the history of the Principality. Monte-Carlo owes its reputation to the inventive and visionary spirit of the Princes of Monte-Carlo who carefully oversaw its balanced development at every step of the way. As we enter a new phase of the story to which this book pays tribute, I would like to give thanks to the Principality. And I hope that the sentence uttered by the Founder of the Company, François Blanc, “We must supply dreams, here” remains topical for a long time to come. »
Jean-Luc Biamonti,
Deputy-President, Monte-Carlo SBM
