ION Adventure Hotel, Selfoss, IcelandThe ION Luxury Adventure Hotel, located less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, used to be housing for workers at the nearby Nesjavellir geothermal power plant. Today, it’s one of Iceland’s chicest holiday boltholes. Its utilitarian past is expressed by the sleek, minimal concrete exterior and equilateral dimensions of the 45 rooms and suites. Perched on the side of an active volcano and decorated with reclaimed driftwood and soothing shades of grey, this bold hotel is an unforgettable experience situated in the beautifully stark landscape of Iceland.
Gastwerk Hotel, Hamburg, GermanyBeginning as a coal storage facility for the nearby gas plant and later serving as an animal feed factory, the Gastwerk Hotel in Hamburg embraces its 120 year history in every aspect of its design. From the huge vaulted entrance hall (formerly home to 5,000 tons of coal) to the exposed brick visible throughout the property, the hotel’s hard-working history permeates every space. The 141 rooms, lofts, and suites are finished with glass and steel, and each of the six room categories have a modern ambience to them while still retaining their own unique industrial style.
Factory Hotel, Munster, GermanyThe Germania Brewery was once home to some of the tastiest beers in Munster, and has found a second life as the Factory Hotel. Manager David Deilmann saw the boundless potential in the revered brewery complex and hired a team of experts to help him fully realize it, resulting in a hotel that is a masterful blend of old and new. Wood, concrete, and felt convene in the 128 rooms and 16 luxury suites to provide guests with comfortable surroundings and a welcoming atmosphere.
Fabriken Furillen, Gotland Island, SwedenOn the Swedish island of Gotland lies Fabriken Furillen, a striking 15 room boutique hotel by the Nobis Group. Built on what used to be military land, the former limestone factory is impressive in its isolation and the bareness of its surroundings. An ethereal beauty encompasses the property, with mountains of gravel and its central concrete tower dominating the scenery. The myriad shades of grey and white mirror the surroundings, and the use of modern Scandinavian design in the interiors provide guests with a warm and welcoming interior.
