Discover six properties from around the globe, which are works of art in their own right thanks to their owners’ progressive artistic programs.

Anya Hotel, Gurgaon, India

Meaning “different” in Sanskrit, Anya is the perfect name for this hotel, which mixes traditional customs with a modern aesthetic in the soaring commercial hub of Gurgaon. Anya Hotel has one of most impressive private art collections in India thanks to owner Misha Vadera's life-long passion for contemporary Indian art. Works from artists such as Bose Krishnamachari and Chittrovanu Mazumdar adorn the hotel’s 117 guest rooms and public areas, while acoustic artistry is taken care of with dedicated music zones playing a curated collection of jazz, electro and Indian classic music.

THE THIEF, Oslo, Norway

Located in Tjuvholmen – the beating heart of Oslo’s contemporary art scene – and surrounded by internationally renowned galleries, it is hardly surprising that THE THIEF has itself become a museum. Thanks to world-class curator Sune Nordgren overseeing THE THIEF’s artistic vision, guests encounter art at every turn in the 116-room hotel: from Sir Peter Blake’s collages in the suites and an Andy Warhol print in the restaurant to Julian Opie’s animation in the elevator. The hotel’s partnership with the Astrup Fearnley Museum, which includes complimentary entry for guests, and evolving collection of pieces from both established and up-and-coming artists, ensure that guests are constantly challenged and inspired.

Hotel Miró, Bilbao, Spain

With the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Fine Art Museum as neighbors, Hotel Miró is unsurprisingly a regular haunt for the great and good of the international art world. Rather more surprising is the hotel’s private collection comprising more than 50 contemporary photographs by renowned Spanish and international artists such as Concha Prada, Ruud Van Empel, and Alberto Peral. The works within the public areas of the 50-room hotel have been carefully curated to provoke thought and contemplation, such as Bilbao-born artist Ana Laura Aláez’s controversial photograph Shiva exhibited in the lobby.

Hotel zum Löwen, Duderstadt, Germany

Hotel zum Löwen, an art-centric boutique hotel in the medieval town of Duderstadt, is the work of local businessman and art collector Hans Georg Näder. Housed in a timber-framed 17th century building, the bones of this traditional 54-room German guesthouse have been ushered into the present thanks to Näder’s enviable art collection, ranging from Andy Warhol polaroids to photographs by German artists Bernd and Hilla Becher. Näder’s passion for exhibiting art has now extended to the creation of a neighboring gallery Kunsthalle HGN, showcasing installations and photographs by the likes of Dan Flavin and Helmut Newton.

Park Hotel Tokyo, Japan

Located in the culturally rich area of Shiodome, Park Hotel Tokyo extends its passion for art throughout its guestrooms and public spaces. Inspired by the classic Japanese art motif of the four seasons, the hotel has created ART Colours, a quarterly exhibition series. Every three months, the Park Hotel Tokyo invites Japanese artists to capture the beauty of the season through the medium of traditional and multi-media artworks, which are exhibited in the hotel’s atrium for locals and guests to enjoy. Taking the art ethos a step further, an ‘Artist in Hotel’ series sees local artists take up residency in a room, using the walls as a canvas onto which the hotel’s artist spirit is interpreted.

Avalon Hotel, Gothenburg, Sweden

Celebrating Nordic roots is very much at the heart of Avalon Hotel’s creative identity. The 101-room hotel’s minimalist Swedish aesthetics create the perfect canvas for an extensive collection of contemporary Scandinavian art and 20th century design classics. Annual events such as the Avalon Art Evening, in which a new addition to the flourishing art collection is unveiled to the public, further cements the hotel’s reputation as a leading authority in the Gothenburg art scene. Now in its eighth year, the Avalon Art Evening has previously highlighted the works of such acclaimed artists as Ernst Billgren, Jan Håfström and Lars Lerin.
