From an expansive new beach and world-class sailing to an award-winning golf course and a new high-profile chef, South Seas Island Resort -- a sprawling yet personal plantation-style resort -- is redefining the luxury travel experience with its grand re-opening February 2007. After Hurricane Charley forced the iconic resort to close its gates for more than 18 months in 2004, South Seas Island Resort has completed an extensive $140 million renovation and is welcoming guests back to Captiva Island, Fla. with more luxurious accommodations and enhanced amenities.
The main pool area at the resort is reopening and providing guests three- times more the space to lounge, splash and be pampered than before. Posh cabanas are available for rent with a private butler to cater to every need. Guests indulge in personal spa services and exquisite South Seas Island Resort cuisine available throughout the day while having a television and mini-fridge option all to themselves in the cabana. The Point restaurant overlooking the pool offers the perfect spot for casual Caribbean fare and an upscale bar upstairs provides sweeping views of Pine Island Sound. After completing an extensive $14 million beach re-nourishment project, the beaches of South Seas Island Resort are more impressive than ever. The two-and-a-half mile stretch of powder-white sands, dotted with bright blue umbrellas is a natural playground for adults and children.
Each accommodation has been fully renovated and most include new euro-top bedding, granite counter tops and flat panel televisions. Meeting planners now find 24,000 square feet of enhanced meeting space complete with high-speed Internet access, video and data projectors and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems.
Also included in the South Seas Island Resort rebirth, Captiva Golf Club was redesigned by Chip Powell as one of the Top Five Short Courses in the world. After recently completing $4 million in upgrades, the course offers guests nine holes of oceanfront golf. Tennis enthusiasts test skills and challenge dexterity in a natural environment, surrounded by peaceful water and vibrant foliage on 19 hard courts, four of which are lit for night play. Renowned as the last safe harbour on the Gulf of Mexico until the Florida Keys, the South Seas Yacht Harbour affords boaters 2,100 feet of dockage for boats up to 130 feet in length.
At the Captiva Kid's Club, children enjoy a break from mom and dad with more of the youngest guests of the resort. Activities include teen kayaking, sandcastle building, coconut painting and beach B.I.N.G.O. Inflatable bounce houses with water slides are a new addition and keep kids cool in the Florida sun. Over the course of 2007, the resort plans include the addition of a recreation island, a Caloosa Indian mound interpretive center and a Golden Door Spa.
