Newly-built hotels and conversions are evenly balanced

Sustainability as an overall concept of social, economic and ecological factors

The interdisciplinary jury of hotel experts has nominated ten hotels from among 40 applications received from 12 European countries for the “Hotel Property Award 2020”, which will be presented on Wednesday, 7 October as part of the hotelforum conference.

The nominees include four hotels from Germany, three from the Netherlands, two from Croatia and one from Denmark. Four of the hotels are purely new constructions; three hotels replace former hotel or spa facilities, and three are the result of the conversion of a former brewery, a publishing house and an old village centre, respectively.

Andreas Martin, Managing Director of hotelforum Management GmbH and Chairman of the jury:Whether we are talking about newly-developed hotels, repositioning after demolition and the construction of new hotels, or the conversion of existing properties, the development of the neighbourhood and the integration of the new hotel into an existing or newly-developed environment play a central role in all the nominated hotels. The interplay between the individual hotel architecture and the respective project environment was discussed all the more intensively by the expert jury and weighed up against one another in terms of sustainability aspects”.

The expert jury with a total of 19 members is made up of ladles and gentlemen from the fields of architecture, development, finance, operation, technical building installations and design of hotel properties, as well as of representatives from the media and academia.

The discussion among the jury regarding the nomination for the ‘Hotel Property Award’ was controversial up to the very end, but it was striking and absolutely positive at the same time that more and more attention is being paid to the topic of sustainability – and not only in terms of energy,” according to jury spokesman Jan-Oliver Meding, Managing Director of MPP. “Sustainability is increasingly also seen as a coherent overall concept combining social, economic and ecological factors, and it is becoming increasingly central for a hotel to be embedded in its immediate surroundings.”

hotelforum considers interaction between the following categories to be decisive in selecting the nominees

  • architectural design quality (innovation)
  • integration into the project’s surroundings (destination)
  • sustainability and technical innovation (the future)
  • the originality of the concept (creativity)
  • economic efficiency (investment)
