The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel is thrilled to announce the completion of a three-year thoughtful transformation of the legendary property.

From new guest rooms and suites to the debut of the hotel’s signature restaurant, Dowling’s at The Carlyle, to the arrival of a new spa by Valmont, the 91-year-old property is preparing for the next generation of travellers with the new unveil while maintaining what The Carlyle’s loyal patrons adore most about the celebrated hotel.

“We are thrilled to finally debut our completed new guest rooms – which are highlighted by the coveted suites in the Tower with sweeping views of Central Park,” said Anthony McHale, managing director of The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel. “Obviously with a beloved property such as The Carlyle, we had to be careful with this restoration and we feel it offers the perfect modern aesthetic to bring the hotel into the future while still respecting the past,” added McHale.

Guest Room & Suite Debut by tonychi studio:

Designed by New York-based, award-winning design practice tonychi, The Carlyle’s newly reimagined guest rooms and suites are inspired by the glamour and beauty of Manhattan’s pre-war era, the Upper East Side, and the glamourous guests whose footsteps have graced the hallowed halls of this storied hotel residence for over ninety years.

Quintessential apartment living meets modern day, with luxurious fixtures and furnishings in the new rooms, black lacquered panelling and illustrated wallpaper of whimsical vignettes from Central Park—an echo of Ludwig Bemelmans and Marcel Vertès—and a thoughtful curation of artwork, books and collected everyday finds, all of which emanate a smart, residential look.

Subtle art deco inspirations are also present, paying reverent homage to The Carlyle’s original designer, Dorothy Draper. William Paley, long-time Creative Director of tonychi studio, led the redesign of 155 of the hotel’s 189 rooms and suites.

The additional 34 rooms and suites remain completely unique in design and range from the Empire Suite by the renowned designer, Thierry Despont, to new suites by New York based interior designer, Dan Fink, to the hotel’s newly acquired Presidential Suite.

Presidential Suite Debut

Encompassing the entire 26th floor of The Carlyle’s tower, the one-of-a-kind Presidential Suite offers the ultimate Manhattan living experience.

Formerly a privately owned apartment for several decades, the suite was recently added to the hotel’s inventory and features 360-degree views of the city, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase sweeping vistas of Central Park, Midtown and beyond. The private elevator landing and dramatic entrance features gold leaf and hand-etched Art Deco inspired murals.

This exclusive residential-style suite is adorned with Venetian plaster walls throughout and features three bedrooms, four full bathrooms and one-half bath, living room, full kitchen and media area. Additionally, the gallery entrance just off the landing features a piano, making it the ideal spot for entertaining and taking in the striking view.

Dowling’s at The Carlyle:

Celebrate a new era of dining with the introduction of Dowling’s at The Carlyle.

This newest addition to The Carlyle family is named after Robert Whittle Dowling, former owner of The Carlyle and an influential urban planner known for his passionate efforts to revitalize the city that never sleeps.

He acquired the hotel in 1944 and was instrumental in turning it into the institution it is today and putting it on the map as a fashionable destination attractive to celebrities, politicians, royalty and tastemakers alike.

It is through his whimsical vision that The Carlyle embodies a distinct sense of place, offering a welcoming, intimate and eclectic atmosphere for New Yorkers and visitors alike.

Newly appointed Executive Chef Sylvain Delpique (formerly of 21 Club) has created a menu that features his interpretations of timeless New York favourites and throwback dishes from another era. Dowling’s at The Carlyle will debut this October following an extensive renovation also by tonychi and will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

The stylish and intimate, 80-seat dining room will exude the glamour and charm of the 1930’s and 40’s highlighted by historic artwork and five newly acquired Ludwig Bemelmans paintings that will pay tribute to the adjacent bar that has been a beloved Upper East Side favourite for 75 years.

The hotel has also launched Dowling’s own dedicated Instagram handle, @dowlingsatthecarlyle.

Valmont at The Carlyle:

At the end of October, luxury Swiss skincare line Valmont will debut their only namesake New York Spa and on December 10th their first US flagship, La Maison Valmont boutique at The Carlyle.

Located on the 3rd floor of the hotel, The Valmont Spa will offer the ultimate hideaway for a luxurious and relaxing experience to renew your sense of self.

Well-known for their anti- aging treatments since 1985, Valmont, perpetuates the unique expertise of Swiss cellular cosmetics with incomparably efficient care treatments giving immediate, long-lasting results.

For the ultimate indulgence, Valmont demonstrates unique and exclusive treatments dedicated to The Carlyle which stands out from others thanks to the signature “butterfly motion” that sets the tone for each rejuvenating treatment as well as integrating the utmost luxurious and results-driven skincare from the range of its collections.

La Maison Valmont is located on the ground floor, just next to the hotel’s 76th Street main entrance, and will be New York’s newest art and beauty destination. From skincare and fragrance to exclusively curated pieces of art, customers can enjoy the expertise of the brand and admire works of art throughout the space which have been hand-picked by owner and Creative Director, Didier Guillon.

The Carlyle Assouline Book:

Commemorating the hotel’s 91st anniversary and featuring the recent renovation by the esteemed tonychi studio, this all-new edition of The Carlyle explores the hotel’s storied history and its status as an enduring icon featuring never-before-seen photographs from the earliest archives up to today’s most exclusive parties.

A beautifully written foreword by musician Lenny Kravitz is not-to-be-missed as he recounts what the hotel has meant to him, both as a child and as an adult. The introduction from James Reginato, Writer-at-Large for Vanity Fair, includes historical details as well as exclusive interviews from well-known patrons.

This stunning volume is a tribute to the rich past and vibrant present of this grand, world-famous hotel. The Carlyle hardcover edition features 208 pages, including over 200 photographs and cover illustration created exclusively for the book by artist Kera Till.

FRAME x The Carlyle:

American fashion brand FRAME has partnered with The Carlyle on a second limited-edition capsule collection. Stemming from the success of the first capsule earlier this year, the duo has expanded the line, adding more styles and colour to the widely loved highly coveted collection.

“The idea for this collaboration was born in the early days of the pandemic when we couldn't visit our favourite places, like The Carlyle, yet wanted to bring that experience to our FRAME customers,” said Erik Torstensson, Co-Founder and Creative Director of FRAME.

“We’ve always emphasized classic, timeless style, which is exactly what The Carlyle embodies — and after receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the first capsule, we knew we had to bring it back.”

Inspired by 1970’s New York City, this capsule captures the decade’s transcendent attitude: polished and sophisticated yet casual and cool. Its effortlessly chic loungewear includes hoodies, joggers, sweatpants, tees, baseball hats and more, embroidered with the hotel’s iconic crest, offering the perfect sportif element and fresh feel to any off-duty wardrobe.
