Graduate hotels Oxford and Cambridge pay homage to their innovators and alumni through impressive design, architecture and engineering.
Lucent Lighting are proud to be a partner in this esteemed project, providing pioneering architectural lighting solutions across these iconic hotels.
Graduate hotels reflect the city and revered universities they are inspired by, steeped in centuries of rich traditions, histories and academic achievements.
Located within the city’s historic landmark, just steps from notable colleges Trinity and St. Johns, Graduate Oxford takes inspiration from the University of Oxford’s legend. Nestled on the idyllic banks of The River Cam, a stone’s throw from the heart of the city centre, Graduate Cambridge immerses the visitor in the unique culture and charm of Cambridge the moment they step through the hotel front doors.
Lucent worked closely with AJ Capital Partners, the hotel group, and lighting consultants Elektra to provide innovative lighting solutions which were designed alongside the refurbished architecture and interiors to complement the unique spaces. Lighting was utilised throughout all key public areas including receptions, restaurants, bars, libraries, and function spaces.
The key aim of the lighting was to highlight quintessential features of the interior architecture, as well as illuminating décor and design which showcase the universities’ histories and honour esteemed alumni.
The lighting design needed to be classic, in tribute to the history of the building and cities, while incorporating modern technology such as dimming systems.
The eye-catching effect of the lighting is apparent at the entrance to the Graduate Cambridge, which features a large bespoke chandelier in a double helix form above the hotel’s grand front desk.
This design is in homage to Cambridge alumna Rosalind Franklin.
Lucent spotlights accentuate the college architecture and crests that adorn the walls, subtly highlighting these well-placed features which make Graduate Cambridge feel like an authentic extension of the university.
Lucent downlights were used to create a relaxed ambience in the bars and restaurants in both hotels. These low-level downlights are discrete, adding a warmth and cosiness to the space without diluting the atmosphere with bright washes of light.
The Graduate Cambridge bar has a central island to encourage communication between guests, with a low central back bar and a clear view of the surrounding architecture.
The Graduate Oxford bar is named the Morse bar, in honour of Colin Dexter. Lucent lighting highlights the back bar, drawing the eye to this focal feature while casting playful shadows in the area surrounding it.
The restaurants have low, beamed ceilings, with decorative pendants in an antique style hanging closely over each table and subtly illuminating the seating, yet the entire space is well-lit by cleverly hidden Lucent spotlights.
All these elements of the lighting design and installation were carefully considered and executed to complement the rich history of the setting and the original architectural features, without compromising on the modern functionality of the lighting products.
