Hotel Company Builds Extreme Escapes for Boys with Bravado

Gender-based trips like Mancations or Manscapes are one of the fastest growing trends in the travel industry offering male-bonding experiences with fancy cocktails, mani + pedis, personal shopper services and the like. Ideal for metros, but what if you’re the type of guy who’s more retro or old school? A man’s man cut from the same mold as John Wayne, aka The Duke, or rough and tumble Clint Eastwood. No need to worry, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has put together a collection of Retrosexual Retreats, guy-geared getaways certain to incite loads of interest from He-Man types or those looking to dial up the adrenaline a few notches. These include:

This year grab your crew and head out to Whistler for the ultimate backwoods experience. Whether it’s ziptrekking across the treetops, heli-skiing down Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, ripping through rapids, 4-wheeling in a Hummer or hitting the links, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler has it all. The opposite of a spa sabbatical, the resort’s Mountain Adventure Package features nightly accommodation, a hearty buffet breakfast and $100 credit towards the extreme activity of your choice. Available year-round, prices start from $198 CDN per person, based on double occupancy.

In Santa Monica, speed (and a little attitude) is the feature attraction of The Fairmont Miramar Hotel’s Mancation Vacation. Teaming up with Route 66 Riders, the hotel has fashioned an escape most men dream of…the Harley-Davidson joy ride. This boys-only gathering is the perfect opportunity for men to escape their daily responsibilities and enjoy a fun weekend of pure male bonding. The package includes overnight accommodation, a Steak Dinner with Wine Pairings at The Grille, a Harley-Davidson bike excursion, and an authentic Harley-Davidson jacket and helmet (for ride only). Rates start from $379 USD and reservations must be made more than a week prior to arrival.

For rugged sorts, Fairmont suggests a trip to the wilds of Quebec. Here guests can strap up for a day of clay shooting at Fairmont Kenauk, one of North America's largest private nature reserves featuring 13 rustic cabins, each on their own lake. With the resort’s Sporting Clay Experience, priced at a $89, sharpshooters hit a course, complete with shotguns, ammunition, eye and ear protection, vests and trap guides, to simulate a hunt. Open year-round, cabin rates start from $269 CDN a night. Providing guests with a different vantage point of the natural world is the Land Rover Experience Package, available at the nearby Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello. With this experience, guys put their driving skills to the test as they expertly pilot a Land Rover over hair-rising obstacles. Starting from $420 CDN a night, the package also includes nightly accommodation, buffet breakfast and two hours of Land Rover instruction.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa’s California Drive and Drive (Faster) Package is the perfect combination of exhilaration and relaxation featuring three days of formula racing and two rounds of golf at the exclusive Sonoma Golf Club. This signature package includes accommodations, "Techniques of Racing" course at ESPN Jim Russell Racing School, two rounds of golf at the Sonoma Golf Club, and dinner for two in Sante Restaurant. Providing the finishing touches on this experience in wine country, guests also receive a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival and a wine tasting at a signature local winery. Rates start from $3,595 USD for the three-night stay.

Guys can exercise their muscles and minds at Maui’s all-suite Fairmont Kea Lani with the resort’s Hawaiian Canoe Experience. A vigorous workout, participants learn not only the physical moves, but also the cultural and historic importance of the canoe experience. Led by the knowledgeable and experienced staff at the property, guests are also taught some of the native chants used when navigating the ocean. Adding a little swagger to their step, guys (and their egos) will be buoyed by the fact that the outrigger was not only used as an instrument of fishing and sustenance gathering, but also as the long distance means by which Hawaiians and the greater Polynesian society protected both settlements and pursued conquests. Room rates at the resort start from $475 USD a night.

Guys can quench their need for speed with the Room & Vroom Package at the Fairmont Monte Carlo. With this package, guys are encouraged to get a little racy and hit the streets of this sun soaked Mediterranean locale, home to F1’s formidable Monaco Grand Prix. Guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping, guys step into the shoes, and lifestyle, of a road course racer behind the wheel of a Ferrari 355 Modena or Ferrari 360 Modena Cabriolet. After some hard driving, they then head back to their well-appointed pit stop, which debuts a 42 million euro makeover this July and offers postcard-perfect views of the Côte d'Azur. Available year-round, the package, which also includes Continental breakfast, is priced at € 494 per night.

Climb a mountain, check! Forge a stream, check! Band together and explore the rugged Canadian Rockies at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, check! With the resort’s Interpretive Mountain Heritage Programs, guys can get back to basics and go head to head with the most infamous and unforgiving lady the world has ever known - Mother Nature. Regardless of your abilities, whether you’re a novice backpacker or skilled outdoorsman, the program offers a variety of hikes and mountaineering experiences led by award winning naturalists and certified guides. And to cap it all off, the resort offers its very own Mountain Adventure Concierge, a one-stop shop to help guys map out their adventure before they arrive – perfect for the planning challenged guys out there. Summer room rates start from $499 CDN a night.

Sun, sand, girls – not quite. Discover a different kind of “bay watch” at The Fairmont Algonquin in New Brunswick, Canada. The resort’s Fundy Bay Watch Package offers guys the chance to ride high and dry (if you’re lucky) on a unique vessel - a 25-foot Zodiac Hurricane. Pile in and head out at amazing speeds and enjoy the famous high tides of the Bay of Fundy while trying to scope out behemoths of the natural world including Finback, Minke and Humpback whales, porpoises, dolphins and seals. Priced at $309 USD a night, the package, which also includes daily breakfast, is available from June 1 - September 10, 2007.

Grab your posse and head overseas to Scotland’s Fairmont St Andrews with the resort’s One for the Boys. A tip top package, with a price tag to match, this getaway includes accommodation for four in a Manor home for two nights, 36 holes of golf on the Torrance Course, soup and sandwich lunch, 36 holes of golf on the Devlin Course, dinner in the bistro style Squire restaurant, full Scottish breakfast, a private whisky tasting, a three course dinner in Esperante, a round on a quad biking circuit and off-road driving experience. A home away from home, the resort’s Manor Homes come complete with four large en-suite bedrooms, five bathrooms, a farmhouse style kitchen, luxurious living room, dining room and a fully equipped business office. Available until December 30, 2007, pricing for four starts from £2,750.

For real men who want to live like Hemingway, the American scribe who held a lifelong passion for outdoor adventure and fishing, Bermuda’s Fairmont Hamilton Princess offers a package to let guests bag the big one with its Reel in Relaxation package. The perfect island escape, the adventure combines two things guys are guaranteed to enjoy - deep-sea fishing and golf. Enjoy a full day, private fishing expedition aboard a 57-foot Carolina Sportsfisher, the largest and fastest charter boat on the Island. After a day on the sea guys regain their land legs with a round of golf and accompanying sports massage. Available year-round, package rates start at $1,939 USD a night.
