While Europe, North America, and the Far East of Asia brace for the onset of summer, the Southern Indian Ocean is bathed in radiant winter sun once again from April through October.

Basking in the middle of these sunny seas is the island country of Mauritius, where the season corresponds with an abundance of tropical goodness and a variety of destination experiences to explore.

“Mauritius is blessed with raw, natural beauty, and this is evident from the moment you arrive,” says Martin Dell, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita.

“Expanses of lush green vegetation and endless vistas of aquamarine greet you at the airport, and all along the coastal drive to set the mood for your getaway at water’s edge.” Here, the days are prepped for endless time in the sun, settling into cool evenings, making for that perfect vacation. “Script your own memorable getaway with exclusive experiences as a Four Seasons guest,” Dell insists. “Personalise your itinerary through the all-new Shopping Cart that details our experiences, and discover an untold Mauritius – on your own terms.”

Sun, Sand and Sea

Spread across one of the largest natural lagoons in Mauritius, the Resort boasts calm and safe beaches.

“Our team of watersports experts will set you up with the props of your choice – sailing, kayaking, stand-up-paddling, wake-boarding and even kite-surfing for those who like a little boost of adrenalin while on vacation,” says Armelle Duval, Director of Rooms, adding, “Supervised lessons for the children can also be arranged.”

The turquoise blue waters around Mauritius are teeming with marine life and a guided experience of snorkelling or deep-sea diving with the Resort’s resident experts can be rewarding.

As part of the Resort’s sustainability program, guests can learn about the underwater reef ecosystem and the mangrove forests that are native to the island, guided by the in-house conservationist.

Beyond the Reef

Private sailing lessons, half- and full-day catamaran tours of the island are especially fun during this time of the year.

“The deserted lighthouse of Ile au Phare and Flamingo Island are two special trips that guests at the Resort can do on a half-day Cataspeed Lagoon Cruise,” she suggests.

Private speedboat excursions are the best way to explore the seas beyond the lagoon and take in some of the spectacular views of the island and neighbouring islands.

Tee off

“Golfing enthusiasts look no further,” smiles Duval, adding another compelling reason to visit Mauritius during this time of the year with perfect conditions for golf.

Enthusiasts of the sport of all levels can enjoy access to not one, but two championship golf courses when they stay at the Resort. Designed by the acclaimed Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer, the courses boast naturally undulating topography, volcanic rock outcrops, lakes and gullies, and a variety of tropical trees and plants.

The Sweeter Side of the Island

The Resort’s villas and residences – several with direct views and access to the beach – are set within an extensive landscaped that was once part of a thriving sugarcane estate called Beau Champ.

“The Resort is vast and is well-worth exploring by bicycle,” she suggests.

Very much part of the rich cultural legacy of the island, these sugarcane estates are indelibly linked with the history of Mauritius and the people who live here.

“The local creole culture itself is a reflection of the diverse groups, and the traditions, food and dynamics they brought with them,” she explains.

The day-long North Mauritius Discovery Tour showcases some of this history, and includes a visit to the Aapravasi Ghat, the Sugar Museum, and also a tasting session of locally produced jams and rums at the New Grove House.

Dine with a View

The beach is ultimately where the action is through the day and even come evening time.

“If the stretch of sand along the Resort itself isn’t enough, Four Seasons maintains a private area of Ile aux Cerfs island,” recommends Duval, “Here, guests can enjoy a special beach experience and the La Plaz Beach Grill.”

An endless supply of stunning sunsets and a night sky filled with stars make evenings drinks and dinner rendezvous especially wonderful this time of year.

The Resort features seven dining outlets satiating every culinary craving – from exotic Asian fare to finest Italian fare, and mouth-watering Mediterranean and Creole offerings.

“Al fresco dining experiences such as the Time to Romance dinner on the beach can be a truly magical way to celebrate love,” she says.

Tailored experiences such as the in-villa Private Barbecue, or the Wine Cellar Dinner can also be arranged for families or friends travelling together.

Island Discovery

“From big-game fishing and to helicopter rides over the island, to dolphin and whale watching, the thrill of the island is all around,” says Martin,

“So grab your flip-flops and sunglasses, and head over to our sunny paradise!”
