On the occasion of World Environment Day, Meliá Hotels International has announced a major milestone in its sustainability journey: more than 4,000 events held across 40 of the company's most strategic hotels in the Meetings & Events segment have achieved carbon neutrality in 2024, thanks to the offsetting of 5,387 tonnes of CO₂.
This achievement is part of the company's “Road to Net Zero Events" programme.
This initiative underscores Meliá's firm commitment to advancing a more sustainable and responsible tourism model, driven by innovation, operational efficiency, and the engagement of stakeholders in making conscious decisions.
The “Road to Net Zero Events" programme is designed to raise awareness among clients about the environmental impact of events. Through this initiative, Meliá measures the carbon footprint generated by accommodation, meeting room usage, and food and beverage services for events held at its 40 flagship MICE hotels.
In collaboration with Creast, Meliá has developed an innovative technology to calculate the carbon footprint of each event at two key stages: during the booking process and after the event concludes. This enables clients to make more informed and responsible choices, without affecting the cost of the event.
Across all 4,000 events hosted since the launch of the “Road to Net Zero Events" programme, more than 1,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions were avoided through the use of renewable energy in hotels equipped with this energy source. The remaining emissions were offset through the purchase of carbon credits via the Climatetrade platform, supporting a clean energy project in the Dominican Republic, one of Meliá's most important destinations for group and convention tourism.
As part of its broader decarbonisation strategy, Meliá Hotels International has also offset the entire carbon footprint generated in 2024 by the Palma Congress Center and its adjoining hotel, Meliá Palma Bay. This includes not only emissions from hosted events, but all operational emissions from the venue, making it a carbon-neutral convention centre (Scope 1 and 2). This milestone further reinforces Meliá's leadership in applying sustainable practices to large-scale infrastructure and key MICE destinations.
“At Meliá, we believe tourism should be a force for good in the communities and destinations where we operate," said Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International.
“Through our 'Travel for Good' framework, we promote concrete initiatives like 'Road to Net Zero Events', a tool to engage our clients in making more responsible choices and to collectively foster a more conscious and sustainable events industry."
