Recently reserved for private bookings and special collaborations, the space now welcomes a wider audience.
With the launch of The Bar, Mandarin Oriental, New York unveils a coveted setting newly accessible to hotel guests and in-the-know locals. Opening 18 September, it marks a new chapter for a space that has always drawn those with a taste for discovery.
Rooted in Legacy, Reimagined for Today
More than a theme, the Silk Road at The Bar serves as both inspiration and invitation. Once a historic corridor of culture and exchange, it now becomes a modern metaphor.
Flavour, fragrance and craftsmanship connect Mandarin Oriental destinations across the world. From the spice markets of Doha to the tea houses of Bangkok, from Istanbul's Grand Bazaar to the quiet elegance of Lake Como, this is a journey stirred by the senses and shaped by stories. Each cocktail captures the spirit of a city, offering guests a taste of place and a moment of discovery.
A Silk Road Story Told Through Cocktails
The Bar's new cocktail menu draws inspiration from iconic ports along the Silk Road, with each destination represented by a signature drink and linked to Mandarin Oriental's global presence. From Beijing to New York, every creation balances regional flavours with precise execution and a sense of ritual.
Highlights include:
- Imperial Jasmine (Beijing): jasmine tea-infused baijiu with citrus tonic
- Siam Sunset (Bangkok): pandan leaf, coconut, pineapple rum and pineapple-pandan foam
- Sultan's Delight (Istanbul): vodka and coffee liqueur, served from a traditional cezve
- Manhattan Spice (New York): 12-year vintage rye with warming spice and aromatic bitters
These signature serves are complemented by a considered selection of fine champagnes, single malts and premium spirits. Presentation is integral to the experience, with each cocktail served in striking, imaginative form as considered as the cocktail itself, each one enhanced by scent, texture or sound to create a truly sensory moment.
A Space Designed for Discovery
Located on the hotel's Sky Lobby floor, adjacent to MO Lounge, The Bar is designed as a sanctuary above the city. The interiors blend Mandarin Oriental's Asian heritage with subtle references to travel and maritime exploration. Rich textures, antiquarian books and curated vintage artefacts lend a sense of character and timelessness, while low lighting and deep leather seating create a setting that encourages lingering.
The music shifts from modern house tracks to global sounds. It is an atmosphere that evolves but never overwhelms, curated for those who notice the details.
“Not Just Another Bar”
“The Silk Road was a place of exchange. Culture, craftsmanship and connection all came together along its path. That same spirit lives within The Bar,” says Marcel Thoma, Area Vice President and General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, New York.
“More than a new venue, The Bar is a reflection of what defines Mandarin Oriental. It is rooted in heritage, elevated through modern luxury and designed to transform the ordinary into something exceptional.”
The Bar is open for walk-ins from 5pm – 1am, Tuesday to Saturday.
