This is a press release selected by our editorial committee and published online for free on 2007-09-26

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Banyan Tree Gallery has been commissioned by the 10-nation organisation to produce an exclusive series of gifting selections.

Inspired by the anniversary’s official theme “One ASEAN at the Heart of Dynamic Asia”, the collections showcase various aspects of the member countries’ cultural heritage including traditional textiles, national flowers and languages. Two other key selections are inspired by the new ASEAN emblem, which features 10 stalks of padi rice representing the 10 countries in Southeast Asia bound together in friendship and solidarity.

Ranging from S$8 - S$380, the items will be available at Banyan Tree Gallery (Singapore), all Museum Shop by Banyan Tree outlets and online from October 2007 onwards.

ASEAN Tapestry
Weaving together unity and solidarity, the vibrant design comprises a distinctive traditional textile weave or print from each nation – such as the Mumdee weave from Thailand, hand-painted batik design created in Singapore and geometric woven design from Vietnam. This creative combination of 10 eclectic styles and patterns is available as a series of stationery mementos like namecard holder, mouse pad, stationery and trinket boxes. A unique and innovative product from this collection is the color changing thermal mug – which gradually reveals the ASEAN Tapestry design when a hot liquid is poured into it.

ASEAN Blossoms
Inspired by the national blooms of each country, this collection showcases some of the breathtaking flora found in Southeast Asia. Through a stylised reinterpretation of national flowers like the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid (Singapore), hibiscus (Malaysia) and frangipani (Laos), Banyan Tree Gallery has developed an elegant 10-coaster set. The stylised designs have also been combined into a collage and transformed into eye-catching t-shirt and notebook selections.

ASEAN Hospitality
Southeast Asia is renowned for its outstanding hospitality, service standards and friendliness. The written script for “hello” and “thank you” in each of the 10 national languages is incorporated into the design for a range of casual apparel including t-shirts, reversible hat and mug.

ASEAN Prosperity
A staple diet in the region, stalks of rice are used in the ASEAN logo with each stalk representing a member nation. Through the creative adaptation of the ASEAN emblem, Banyan Tree Gallery has developed a range of lifestyle gifts for the home such as a porcelain teapot sets, lacquered jewellery case, lampshade and lacquered coffee/tea box.

Official ASEAN Logo Selections
The ASEAN logo is also reinterpreted and presented through a sleek monogram design – creating a tasteful selection of accessories such as cuff links made from 925 silver, woven silk tie, metal namecard holder, and silk notebook.
