THREE OUT OF FOUR DINERS PREFER A SMOKING BAN
Zagat Survey today released its 2008 Europe's Top Restaurants guide. This updated guide covers 1,568 of the continent's best eateries including 180 important additions in 27 cities from Amsterdam to Zurich. A total of 14,828 savvy local diners shared their experiences in producing the guide. In positive signs for the industry, surveyors reported dining and spending more than last year.
Italo Amore: When asked about their favorite cuisine, 34% of surveyors cited Italian food, followed by French (24%) and Mediterranean (15%). However, an increasing number of other ethnic cooking styles are sprouting up in high-end European restaurants. There are 101 different cuisines featured in this guide, from Bavarian to Basque and Turkish to Tuscan.
Going Greener: Whatever the ethnic accent or cuisine, surveyors are adamant about seeing healthier food come out of the kitchen. In fact, 65% are in favor of banning trans fats from restaurants. And with environmentally conscious consideration, 59% say they are willing to pay more for sustainably raised produce, and another 58% favor having heart healthy items on restaurant menus.
No If's, And's or Butt's: Hopping on the healthy bandwagon, a full 73% of surveyors support a complete smoking ban in restaurants. Already European governments in Ireland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and, most recently, the U.K. have adopted no-smoking legislation.
Service With a Smile: In nearly every city that Zagat surveys, service is the #1 complaint about dining out. When asked what country has the friendliest service, Italy wins with 40% of the vote, followed by Spain (16%), Ireland (11%), Great Britain (9%) and the Netherlands (6%); France and Germany scored lowest with only 4% each.
