Meeting Michael Calixte at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, one is immediately struck by his calm, measured presence and the genuine humility he radiates. Before we got into any business, I needed to make sure I knew how to pronounce his name, and was surprised to learn of his Basque origins, and that all letters are pronounced as they appear, including the x.

As the chat unfolded, there was something inherently soothing about his demeanour – a quality that seems perfectly aligned with the luxury hospitality world he's been smoothly navigating. As Regional Vice President for Fairmont Morocco and General Manager of Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, Calixte now oversees four flagship properties: Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, Fairmont Taghazout Bay, Fairmont La Marina Rabat-Salé, and Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier.

This recent elevation represents both recognition of his proven capabilities and a strategic expansion of Fairmont's Moroccan footprint. Calixte brings to this role a nuanced understanding of Morocco's multilingual, multicultural environment, recognising it as one of the country's greatest assets. His vision extends beyond operational excellence to encompass sustainable luxury practices, community engagement, and the cultivation of talent that reflects Morocco's rich diversity. As Morocco prepares for increased global attention, particularly with the 2030 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Calixte's measured, authentic approach positions Fairmont to lead in creating experiences that honour both international luxury standards and Morocco's distinctive cultural heritage.

Calixte's career trajectory in luxury hospitality has been marked by a deep understanding of what truly distinguishes exceptional service from merely adequate accommodation. His philosophy centres on creating meaningful, personalised experiences that forge lasting emotional connections with guests. Rather than pursuing luxury for its own sake, he advocates for authenticity and relevance, believing that today's discerning travellers seek not just comfort, but genuine engagement with their destination. This approach has shaped his leadership style across Morocco's diverse hospitality landscape, where each property must honour its unique cultural context while maintaining Fairmont's exacting standards.

Journal des Palaces: You've recently taken on the dual role of Regional Vice President for Fairmont Morocco and General Manager of Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech. What is your overarching vision for Fairmont's presence in Morocco, and how do you plan to differentiate the brand in an increasingly competitive luxury market?

Michael Calixte: My vision is rooted in synergy and excellence. Each Fairmont property in Morocco, Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, Fairmont Taghazout Bay, Fairmont La Marina Rabat-Salé and Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier, embodies its own unique spirit and story. My role is to celebrate those distinctions while aligning them under a unified commitment to excellence. In today's evolving luxury landscape, true differentiation lies in emotional connection. We focus on crafting meaningful, personalised experiences, whether it's a bespoke dinner set in a secluded garden nook or a wellness ritual inspired by local traditions. Fairmont Morocco's leadership will continue to be defined not just by refined luxury but by authenticity and relevance.

Luxury hospitality is experiencing exponential growth and evolving guest expectations, particularly personalisation and wellness. How is Fairmont Morocco adapting its service offerings to meet these new demands?

At our Fairmont properties in Morocco, we recognise that today's guests are looking for more than comfort; they expect relevance, discretion, and meaningful engagement. Our focus is on delivering well-being and thoughtful personalisation across every touchpoint. A key part of this lies in our culinary offering, which plays an essential role in how guests connect with a destination. From menus that showcase Moroccan heritage and local ingredients to bespoke dining experiences tailored to individual preferences, we view cuisine as a powerful means of creating lasting impressions.

This approach is complemented by wellness programs rooted in local traditions and tailored experiences for families, all designed to reflect the needs of a diverse, global clientele. It reflects the expectations of our guests from the Gulf and the broader MENA region, as well as our key European markets, such as France and the United Kingdom. For us, personalisation is not about excess, it's about understanding context, anticipating needs, and delivering with consistency and cultural awareness.

Sustainability is now a baseline expectation for luxury travellers. What specific initiatives are you implementing across Fairmont's Moroccan properties to address environmental responsibility and sustainable luxury?

Sustainability is no longer a choice; it's a fundamental responsibility, particularly in the luxury hospitality sector. Across our Fairmont properties in Morocco, we are committed to responsible environmental practices supported by recognised certifications. Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, Fairmont La Marina Rabat-Salé, and Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier are Green Key certified, while Fairmont Taghazout Bay holds Green Globe certification.

At Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, for example, we integrate solar energy, implement water-saving measures through intelligent landscaping, and prioritise local sourcing, especially within our culinary offerings. Initiatives such as our organic olive oil harvest and curated experiences in the botanical gardens allow guests to engage with sustainability in a tangible and meaningful way. We aim to align luxury with environmental responsibility, ensuring that comfort and quality are delivered with lasting purpose.

Staffing and talent retention are significant challenges in luxury hospitality today. What strategies are you using to attract, develop, and retain top talent, and how do you foster a culture of genuine hospitality among your teams?

People are central to our success. Our focus goes beyond recruitment; we prioritise long-term engagement by offering clear career development opportunities and encouraging mobility within our hotels, whether at Fairmont or other Accor brands, both in Morocco and internationally. We invest in structured training, internal promotions, and recognition programs that allow our teams to grow and evolve within the group. We build loyalty and foster a culture where people are motivated to contribute to a consistent and high-quality guest experience.

Technology is transforming the luxury guest experience from choosing the destination to AI-driven personalisation to contactless services. How is Fairmont leveraging technology?

Technology is a powerful enabler, but it should never overshadow the human element. Across our Fairmont properties in Morocco, we are introducing digital tools that enhance both convenience and personalisation. At Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, for example, we offer an all-in-one platform that allows guests to access restaurant menus, explore resort activities, and quickly book dining experiences, spa treatments, golf tee times, or fitness, tennis, and padel lessons, all from a single interface.

Our focus remains on finding the right balance, using technology to streamline the guest journey while preserving the emotional intelligence and personal connection that define true luxury.

With four flagship Fairmont properties now under your leadership in Morocco, how do you ensure each hotel maintains its unique identity while upholding the brand's standards of excellence?

Each property is a reflection of its environment. Rabat embodies modern elegance and diplomacy, Tangier Mediterranean vibrancy, Taghazout coastal tranquillity, and Marrakech cultural grandeur. My role is to support each hotel in expressing its unique voice while ensuring consistency in what we call the Fairmont promise: exceptional service, emotional connection, and immersive experiences. This dual approach enables us to preserve individuality while fostering growth as a unified brand.

Morocco is multilingual and multicultural. How does that impact your recruitment strategy and your social responsibility initiatives?

This diversity is one of Morocco's greatest assets, and it profoundly influences how we recruit, train, and engage. Multilingual talent is essential not only for communication but for fostering empathy and inclusion. For us, social responsibility means staying connected to our surroundings, whether by sourcing locally or contributing to community development. Many of our team members come from nearby Amazigh villages, and that local connection brings depth, pride, and authenticity to the guest experience. It's through these close ties that we're able to offer something truly rooted in place, not just in design or concept, but in the people who bring it to life.

Looking ahead, what do you see as the most significant opportunities and challenges for luxury hospitality in Morocco, and how is Fairmont preparing to lead in this dynamic environment?

Morocco is entering an exciting chapter, with more global attention than ever, especially as we look ahead to major events like the 2030 FIFA World Cup. There's a real opportunity here to strengthen infrastructure, expand cultural tourism, and offer visitors more profound and meaningful experiences.
The challenge will be to grow in a way that remains true to what makes Morocco unique: its authenticity, traditions, and natural beauty. At Fairmont, our role extends beyond operating hotels. It's about creating places that reflect the identity of their location and contribute to the long-term development of the destination. I'm focused on ensuring we deliver experiences that are both meaningful and relevant, while building something lasting for our guests, our teams, and the communities we're part of.
