Renovation now complete: new Adlon ballroom at Hotel Adlon Kempinski showcases craftsmanship from Berlin to Hong Kong (Germany)

Press release published on 2018-09-14

BERLIN’S MOST RENOWNED BALLROOM IS REOPENING AFTER A 2.5 MILLION EURO REFURBISHMENT

This is the new ballroom

The finest materials, stylish design and harmonious colours right down to the last detail, wherever you cast your glance. The interior designer Anne Maria Jagdfeld has once again made a clear style statement in favour of classic modernity with the renovation of the famous Adlon ballroom.

From now on, guests invited to balls, dinners and conferences in the ballroom of the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin will not be overwhelmed by any effusive splendour. Instead, they will be captivated by the exclusiveness of the materials, the perfect craftsmanship and the stylish overall concept that is evident throughout the 500 m² room. “We wanted to create the ideal setting for the high-calibre events taking place here. For all the luxuriousness of the room’s decor, the focus still needs to be on the event itself,” explains Matthias Al-Amiry, Managing Director of Hotel Adlon Kempinski, referring to the deliberations behind the renovation concept.

Inspired by historical ballrooms, the choice fell on opulent chandeliers, soft carpeting in the style of Versailles parquet flooring and giant mirrors, all of which does not seem that unusual at first. However, these design elements have been created by some of the best specialists in their field. The sight of the carpet transports you to the world of glittering balls at the Palace of Versailles, its pattern matches the Palace’s elegant parquet flooring so precisely. At the Adlon, a decision was made against wooden parquet flooring and in favour of a hand-knotted carpet for acoustic reasons. This taupe-coloured masterpiece of carpet manufacturing was created by the “House of Tai Ping”, carpet makers of international renown based in Hong Kong. The large mirrors are made of Verre Églomisé and were manufactured by the company “Verre D’Or”. The most prominent of these mirrors hangs over the bar in the similarly redesigned, lighter ballroom foyer and shows a scene from the legendary ballroom of the old Adlon. It was designed by Emma Peascod who has dedicated her studio in Gloucestershire, UK, to the creation of bespoke glass pieces using this virtually forgotten technique of reverse glass gilding.

The new ballroom not only showcases exceptional craftsmanship and design from abroad, it also features expertise and high-quality material sourced locally and nationally in Germany. The special brush-stroke technique used by Berlin painting companies gives an inviting wood effect to the ivory-coloured walls and the balconies on the Bel Etage have been straightened and equipped with elegant, hand-made brass balustrades from the Ore Mountains. Needless to say, the event equipment is absolutely first-class and state of the art. However, the designers have cleverly concealed it so that it is virtually invisible.

Anne Maria Jagdfeld’s renovation of the Adlon ballroom has again been an unqualified success. She has managed to transform a room rich in history into an aesthetically pleasing, modern multi-purpose space. This legendary ballroom with an area of 500 m² in the even more legendary Grand Hotel Adlon is now ready to host celebrations and dance events, conferences and meetings once more. Crowned heads of state will now parade on the new Versailles parquet carpet under the new chandeliers. Similarly Hollywood greats will appear at press conferences, global players will launch their products and top politicians will invite guests to dinner against this sumptuous new backdrop. Outstanding cuisine is served at dinners and banquets not only by the top chefs at their kitchen stoves and new live cooking stations but also from La Tavola’s elegant buffetware which is unparalleled in its aesthetic appeal, allowing the most impressive food displays. Event planners, guests and gourmets alike will be absolutely delighted, that much is certain.
