Ian L. Jones, General Manager of Swissôtel Grand Shanghai, which is scheduled to open in spring 2008, was recently awarded the Five Star Diamond Award as “One of the Finest Hoteliers Worldwide” by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences for his commitment and excellence in the hotel industry.

The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences was formed in 1989 as an offspring of a restaurant-rating bureau, originally founded in 1949. The Academy is governed by a board of internationally renowned trustees that oversees the decision to recognize establishments worldwide for their outstanding commitment to hospitality within their category and classification. Members of international financial institutions, industry professionals and world travelers recommend hotels, restaurants, airlines, cruise ships and exceptional Chefs. Establishments are anonymously visited and evaluated based on their ambience, gastronomy, cleanliness and hospitality to ensure that they continuously maintain the high standards set by the Academy, after a final selection is made, the board votes upon nominations.

Vittorio G. Gai, International General Manager for The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences explained: “Ian L Jones was nominated due to his commitment to the hospitality industry, to his exceptional recent performance, which Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy, Moscow reached and to his contribution to increase the overall level of hospitality worldwide. Ian as a young, dynamic hotelier has the capability to operate in countries with a culture completely different from his own and at the same time, create a strong team spirit, sharing his knowledge with all members of staff.”

Commenting on the award, Ian Jones said: “I was extremely thrilled when I found out about my nomination and even happier and extremely honoured when to find out I had won. After almost 23 years in the hospitality industry, I am pleased to be recognized for my commitment to guest service, team member satisfaction and for my passion for the industry. Obviously this award must be shared with many, who along the way have guided and coached me into the General Manager I am today, I personally wish to thank Meinhard Huck, Managing Director of Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts who gave me my first opportunity as a General Manager, and now I can be a part of coaching and sharing my passion with the hoteliers of tomorrow, I couldn’t be happier ”.
