The Peninsula Hotels unveils its most glamorous and technologically advanced hotel

On October 18th, The Peninsula Hotels introduced its ninth hotel, the spectacular and iconic new The Peninsula Shanghai. Gracing Shanghai's celebrated Bund and styled after a 1920s and 30s noble residence, the hotel reflects the city's heritage as "the Paris of the East." Architect David Beer, formerly of BBG/Architects, and Paris-based interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon of PYR have blended subtle Chinese influences with a modern interpretation of the Art Deco movement into the 235 superbly appointed guestrooms and suites, which are among the largest in the city.

The new landmark property marks the return of parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, to its Shanghai roots after an absence of 60 years. The company operated four of the city's premier hotels - The Kalee, Majestic, Palace and Astor House - in the first half of the last century.

"Opening The Peninsula Shanghai is a unique opportunity to re-establish our historic links to this wonderful city. We feel very comfortable and proud to be back," says Paul Tchen, General Manager. "Shanghai's a natural part of our storyline, a romantic and historic continuation of the golden age of travel and Peninsula's rich heritage."

Grand and glamorous, yet with a welcoming feel, the hotel is the Bund's first new building in more 60 years and returns classic luxury to Shanghai. Occupying a prime site on the Huangpu River beside the former British Consulate Gardens and the Suzhou Creek, The Peninsula Shanghai offers spectacular views of the Pudong skyline, river and historic Bund.

Never before has Shanghai seen elegance, service and style on this scale, in a hotel that offers historical authenticity blended with Peninsula's pioneering in-room technology.

Hotel highlights include:
-- Guestrooms that provide in-room business center capabilities, including VoIP with complimentary long-distance calling services and a fax/printer/scanner/photocopier.
-- Yi Long Court restaurant featuring the cuisine of Michelin Star chef Tang Chi Keung.
-- The Peninsula's famous afternoon tea, served in the triple-height Lobby lounge overlooking the former British Consulate Gardens.
-- Sir Elly's, the rooftop restaurant bar and terrace, offering modern European cuisine with French influences along with spectacular skyline views of the city.
-- Salon de Ning, a late-night lounge evoking Shanghai's decadent heyday
-- A signature suite's 11,733-square foot wrap-around terrace with some
of the city's most breath-taking views.

-- The Peninsula Spa by ESPA, with special spa treatments unique to The
Peninsula Shanghai.
