This important investment milestone follows the opening of Kimpton branded hotels in Edinburgh and Glasgow earlier this year. With the reintroduction of the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand in Scotland, IHG further secures their position as the UK’s largest luxury hotel operator.

The hotel was previously sold but the integration of the Principal portfolio provided the opportunity to bring it back in to the IHG brand family. But after significant renovations, InterContinental Edinburgh – The George has re-entered the system, enabling IHG to expand their flagship luxury brand in their home market.

Karan Khanna, Managing Director, UK & Ireland, IHG commented: “We are excited to grow our luxury presence in Scotland as we continue the integration of the Principal portfolio. Edinburgh is a key city in our home market so it’s great to reintroduce our flagship brand, InterContinental, to the city. I am confident its arrival will receive a warm welcome and the team will deliver a great service to guests.“

Located in the central district of New Town, the InterContinental Edinburgh – The George is surrounded by iconic attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, Charlotte Square and Edinburgh Farmers Market. The property is an integration of Georgian townhouses that were originally built in the 1780s and would have been amongst the most exclusive addresses in the city. The hotel design preserves the original beauty and architecture of the building whilst offering a contemporary, modest luxury design.

Tom Rowntree, Vice President, Global Luxury Brands, IHG, said: “InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, the world’s first and most international luxury hotel brand, celebrates cultural experiences in the most exciting destinations across the globe. InterContinental Edinburgh – The George is a fabulous addition to the brand, marking the return of InterContinental to Edinburgh.  We look forward to helping our guests unlock the heritage of this hotel and the enchanting city of Edinburgh.”

InterContinental Edinburgh – The George is the third InterContinental open in the UK, joining InterContinental London – Park Lane and InterContinental London – The O2. IHG currently has 349* hotels operating under eight brands in the UK, including: InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, voco, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge Suites, with a further 26* in the pipeline.
