Banyan Tree Group Harvests New Green Awards In 2007

This is a press release selected by our editorial committee and published online for free on 2007-09-26

Reaching the third quarter of the year, Banyan Tree Group takes stock of its recent awards and accolades for environmental achievements. With a core founding value to embrace the environment and empower the people, the Group has actively practised sustainable development and responsible tourism since its inception 14 years ago. As the Group expands to develop over 40 new properties worldwide in the next few years, it continues to win accolades for its firm environment stance.

In August 2007, Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru received the prestigious President of Maldives Green Resort Award 2006 from His Excellency President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Only one resort is chosen each year in Maldives to be recognised for the good practices of the property, in initiating socially and environmentally beneficial projects. This is a double honour as Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru had previously been awarded the same distinction in 2004. The resort’s Banyan Tree Maldives Conservation Lab, the first of its kind, actively conducts research and educational activities with support from international scientists, resort guests and local school children.

Banyan Tree Seychelles was also singled out by Kuoni Travel for a Green Planet Award, the Swiss travel group’s established recognition for hoteliers that adhere to its environmental standards and show a progressive attitude towards ecological concerns. Located within a sheltered bay with neighbouring coastal wetlands and tropical hillside, the resort has participated in various marine conservation efforts like whale shark and turtle monitoring, as well as active wetlands management.

The environmental initiatives implemented by Banyan Tree Bangkok are given further public recognition, as it passed the Green Leaf Standard environmental assessment and auditing process to receive its certificate from the Green Leaf Foundation - a member of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Banyan Tree Ringha triumphed in the Business Traveller Asia-Pacific readers’ poll, reaping the title of Best Resort in the Asia-Pacific for the first time. The boutique resort is an ideal location for small-to-medium sized groups to conduct dynamic conferences and corporate bonding. The first luxury resort in Yunnan, Banyan Tree Ringha balances the cultural, historical and ecological integrity of the developing Shangri-la highlands in China through its creative use of authentic refurbished Tibetan farmhouses.

The Royal Pool Villa of the Banyan Tree Desert Spa and Resort, Al Areen was included in Elite Traveler’s prestigious Pure Decadence list of 101 Most Exquisite Hotel Suites & Villas. The Bahrain resort soft opened in April 2006.

Readers continued to vote for Banyan Tree properties, as seen in the Conde Nast Traveller 2007 Readers’ Poll award to Angsana Resort & Spa Great Barrier Reef. The sunny Palm Cove resort scored 2nd place in the Favourite Hotels in Australasia and South Pacific category.

On a corporate level, Banyan Tree Holdings was included in the Singapore Top 100 International Company award by Singapore International 100 – which is organised by International Enterprise Singapore to identify and recognise Singapore’s top 100 companies ranked by overseas revenue. This is in line with the Group’s continued global growth with over 40 resorts and hotels in the pipeline.
