InterContinental Hotels Group Appoints Timothy P. Kirwan, General Manager of the New InterContinental Boston

ATLANTA (October 31, 2005) – InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) [LON: IHG, NYSE: IHG (ADRs)], the world’s largest hotel group by number of rooms, has named Timothy P. Kirwan as General Manager of the new InterContinental Boston.


As General Manager, InterContinental Boston, Mr. Kirwan is responsible for launching the $310 million, five-star new hotel which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in Fall 2006. Mr. Kirwan, a leading hotelier in New England for over 30 years, joins the InterContinental Boston effective December 2005.

His proven operational leadership and keen understanding of the Boston market will be instrumental in successfully launching the InterContinental brand in the city of Boston,” said Lew Fader, vice president of operations, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, North America. “We’re delighted that Tim will bring his passion for his employees, guests and the city of Boston to our new hotel.”


Mr. Kirwan is leaving his current position as Managing Director of Hotel Commonwealth in Boston to join the Intercontinental Boston. Under his direction, Hotel Commonwealth received numerous industry awards including Best New Business Hotel by Forbes.com, AAA Four Diamond Awards, and “Best Restaurant” Great Bay with Michael Schlow and Chris Myers by Boston Magazine and much other local recognition.

In addition to his role at Hotel Commonwealth, Mr. Kirwan served as Chief Executive Officer of Monarch Hotels/Brauer Management where he was responsible for the pre-opening and development of multiple hotel projects in the New England area and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and also the management of luxury condominiums in Greater Boston.


Mr. Kirwan began his hospitality career at the Inn at the Mountain in Stowe, Vt. He has held increasing roles of responsibility over the years with such hotel brands as Westin and Hyatt and has opened several hotels in the Greater Boston area including the Hyatt-Cambridge, The Bostonian, The Westin-Providence and The Hotel Commonwealth.


The InterContinental Boston is located on the Boston Harbor in the heart of the city’s financial district and just ten minutes from Logan International Airport. The 424-room hotel will be the first InterContinental hotel in Boston and will offer a spa and health club with indoor pool, signature restaurant, multiple cocktail venues and 32,000 sq. ft. of meeting/function space, including the largest ballroom in the downtown Boston market.

The InterContinental Boston will be part of Extell Boston Harbor LLC’s new building at 500 Atlantic Avenue, which also will include 130 luxury condominiums known as The Residences at the InterContinental.
