OMO7 Osaka was awarded the Excellent Greening Award and the Architectural Signage and Art Award at the 42nd "Osaka Machinami Awards" (Osaka Cityscape Architecture Award), hosted by Osaka Prefecture and Osaka City, on December 22, 2023.

The awards were presented at an award ceremony on January 24, 2024.

The Osaka Cityscape Architecture Awards AKA "Osaka Machinami Awards"

This award show aims to enhance the overall urban environment by encouraging organizations to create beautiful, distinctive, and impressive cityscapes, awarding organizations that construct and maintain outstanding buildings and urban landscapes.

This award1, initiated in 1981, has become a notable recognition and a distinguished accolade.

Judges’ Comments: Excellent Greening Award

The green space project called “Miya-green” dramatically transformed the landscape visible from the platforms of the JR Shin-Imamiya Station.

While the approximately 7,600 square meters of greenery is only accessible to hotel guests, the project presents lush landscape visible from the surrounding area, a rare sight in the densely populated urban area, significantly contributing to the scenery of the local area.

Rather than a tasteless expansive green space, it also includes park elements like inclined pathways, wood decks, a central grass square, and roofed multi-functional spaces, showcasing the layered allure of urban green spaces.

Judges’ Comments: Architectural Signage and Art Award

Now a common sight in urban settings, 3D letter signages are often used to highlight the area’s name.

The 3D letter signage of OMO7 is strategically placed in the corner, serving as a backdrop for both Miya-green, which won the Excellent Greening Award, and the hotel.

This placement offers the most visually appealing angle for Instagrammable photos. At night, the building's exterior, coated with membrane material, transforms into a media facade that entertains with computer-controlled LED light shows2.

The integration of these elements is expected to turn OMO7 into a new tourist attraction in Osaka.

Reference: Cooling Effects of Garden Area Miya-green

The values in the diagram represent the Standard Effective Temperature (SET)*3.

The garden includes approximately 1,700 square meters of grass, around 200 plantings, and a terrace deck with a pergola*4, resulting in a cooling effect facilitated by the green landscape.

The reasons for this cooling effect include the suppression of surface heating due to lush green surfaces, shading provided by trees and pergolas, and the watering of plantings*5.

In intense summer sunlight, apparent temperature can reach 40°C even when the actual ambient temperature is 30°C, mainly due to the heating of urban surfaces like asphalt.

However, it has been shown that natural and artificial shades can contribute to a reduction of 3–7°C in apparent temperature while greenery and water-retaining surfaces can lead to a 1–2°C decrease in perceived temperature*6.

Simulations replicating Miya-green's greenery, pavement, and surrounding roads and blocks, showed that perceived temperature one meter above the ground under trees and pergolas are approximately 5°C lower compared to asphalt surfaces.

In the grassy fields, the apparent temperature was about 1°C lower than asphalt surfaces.

*3 Considered as an indicator of the level of comfort in a given space, it is defined as the temperature of the standard environment with a relative humidity of 50%, where thermal sensation and heat dissipation are equivalent to those in real environments.
*4 Roof constructed with wood and aluminum.
*5 Watering grass, crops, etc.
*6 Based on the Ministry of the Environment official website's guidelines on coping with heat in urban areas (Revised edition from March 2018).
