Six Senses has earned its position as a leader in the global hospitality sector by combining luxury lifestyle and environmental responsibility. As a demonstration of this commitment, on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8.30pm local time, all Six Senses-branded properties and spas located worldwide will participate in Earth Hour 2009, a global environmental awareness event organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

In addition to turning off the lights, each Six Senses resort and spa has created programmes offering guests innovative experiences to enjoy during Earth Hour. At properties including Soneva Gili by Six Senses in the Maldives, Six Senses Destination Spa Phuket in Thailand and Evason Ma’In Hot Springs in Jordan, romantic candlelit dinners and educational group discussions led by each of the resort’s resident environmentalist are some of the activities guests can enjoy on the night. Soneva Fushi by Six Senses in the Maldives, which will become carbon free by 2010, is offering guests an array of dining experiences with accompanying musicians and the opportunity to star-gaze and learn about the universe with the resort’s resident astronomy students at the Observatory. Six Senses Spas, with locations ranging from Canary Wharf in London, Barcelona in Spain, Doha in Qatar and Phuket in Thailand, will offer group meditation classes, educational discussions and spa treatments in the soft glow of locally produced candles.

Earth Hour is a global movement in which tens of millions of people around the world come together to demonstrate their concern about climate change by turning off their lights for one hour. The lights-out initiative has grown significantly over the past two years. It now hopes to reach out to more than one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world and demonstrates that by working together, each person can make a difference in the fight against climate change.

The Earth Hour initiative is in line with Six Senses’ 20/20 vision, which is to make the entire Six Senses portfolio not just zero carbon in our on-site operations by 20/20, but for Six Senses to implement programmes that will result in a net absorption of C02. Six Senses will, thus, go beyond zero carbon to reach the next step of our goal, which is to be decarbonising. This means that rather than leaving a small footprint and touching the land that we develop, we will in fact be erasing the footprints and damage caused by others.
