Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Nominated As One of the World’s New 7 Wonders (Australie)

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is one of 261 nominees to become part of the "New 7 Natural Wonders of the World."

Along with another Aussie wonder, Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef has made it to the second round. The Reef is currently placed 3rd (out of a possible 26) in its category of Seascapes. The top 11 of this category will progress through to the next round.

Popular voting is underway now through at July 7th, 2009 at http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/ . One voting opportunity per email address. Vote for one nomination on each continent. The top 77 nominations as voted by the public will go through to phase three. A panel of expert judges will announced 21 shortlisted nominees on July 21st, 2009. After another round of popular voting, the Top 7 will be announced in 2011.

The New 7 Wonders Foundation was established in 2001 by Swiss born Canadian film-maker, author and adventurer Bernard Weber. It is a non-profit foundation with the aim to contribute to the protection of the world's human-built and natural heritage and to foster respect for the cultural diversity on our planet. Fifty percent of the net revenue raised by the project is to be used to fund monument documentation and conservation efforts world-wide.
