Phuket’s first participation in this worldwide event

As part of its ‘green’ campaign, five-star Phuket resort Indigo Pearl was one of the first resorts in Phuket to participate to the ‘International Coastal Cleanup” day on September 25, 2010.

Every year in September, more than half-a-million people in 100 countries remove millions of pounds of trash from beaches and waterways all over the world. The Ocean Conservancy is the organiser of this worldwide event.

This will be Phuket's first participation in this important worldwide event where data about marine debris is collected on data cards and returned to the Ocean Conservancy for them to create a report with a country-by-country breakdown of the amount and type of trash in the ocean. This report is also used to indicate the impact marine debris have on wildlife and its connection to global climate change.

Close to 300 people including staff from Indigo Pearl, Adamas Resort and Spa, DEWA, Nai Yang Beach Resort, Home & Life Orphanage Foundation, Wat Mongkol School as well as local residents worked hand in hand to clean the entire stretch of Nai Yang beach.

Indigo Pearl’s participation in the beach cleaning movement was in partnership with the international Sustainable Smiles (www.sustainablesmiles.org) movement which promotes environmental, social and economic sustainability among local communities and supported by the local governmental bodies.

Mr. Khun Ismile Midukem, Deputy Vice President of Chamber Sakhoo Sub District, Mr. Gallardo Professor and Acting Coordinator for Aquaculture and Aquatic Resource Management and well and Ms. Kelly Franklin, Sustainable Smile Founder delivered the opening speech.

“The seven miles beach has been divided into six different areas and teams of four were in charge not only of randomly cleaning but also reporting what was picked up.” Kelly Franklin explained. “The data recorded will be sent to Ocean Conservancy, the global environmental organisation leading the International Coastal Cleanup movement for a country-by-country report on what type of trash is found on beaches around the world”.

Over 105 trash bags weighing a total of 1250 kg were filled. The day was also marked by a small exhibition organised by local students showing artworks made of 2,000 ‘nurdles’, small preproduction plastic pellets and illustrating the negative effects these small plastic parts have on the local waters. The exhibition is part of a four month environmental education program created by Indigo Pearl and Sustainable Smiles.

“We would like to thank everybody who participated in the big clean up”, said General Manager of Indigo Pearl, Arnaud Girodon. “We also hope that everybody will be able to join us again next year”

As part of this environmental awareness campaign Indigo Pearl is also offering a special ‘eco-tour’ package, inviting guests to ‘give back to the community’ during their next vacation.

The eco-adventure is priced at THB 21,900 with accommodation in a signature Pearl Bed Suite with complimentary extras including a la carte dinner for two with cocktails at any one of two restaurants at Indigo Pearl, one-hour foot massage for two at IN-DI-GO Spa and a 50% discount on an in-room spa milky bath as well as the Eco Tour.
