Six Senses Resorts & Spas has signed a partnership with The Alpina Gstaad, Switzerland to develop and manage the hotel’s spa.
Scheduled to open in December 2012, The Alpina Gstaad is set in the heart of the Bernese Alps and will offer an intimate and discreet haven for discerning local and international guests in search of an authentic and indulgent Alpine experience. With 56 rooms and suites, numerous possibilities for dining, relaxation and cultural enrichment, this boutique hotel will deliver a new level of distinction, while nurturing the local mountain traditions.
The 2,000 sqm Six Senses Spa will be expertly integrated into the hotel’s cosy yet luxurious setting and its simple design will infuse the Alpine spirit of the surrounding environment with an Eastern flair, creating secluded, warm and natural ambience.

Taking the cue from the Six Senses philosophy, only natural and where possible, locally-sourced materials are being used throughout the spa. Local Swiss pine wood will evoke a sense of place but with a darker wood stain as a nod to the oriental design language. Natural fabrics in bright aqua shades will add fresh highlights to the natural palette in the reception area and subtle beige tones have been used throughout the spa.
Guests’ journey begins the moment they get a glimpse of the “Tree of Life” in the spa reception, which represents the universal concept of life, growth and vitality. Unusual artwork flows from one space to the next, acting as a silent guide through the spa.
The natural environment has provided inspiration for other features such as the changing rooms with their carved rock basins, glowing honey marble lamps and rough natural timber plinths, which reflect the raw nature of the mountainous surroundings. In the chalet-style treatment rooms, the local design is evident through the use of the robust timber beams, while unique silhouette art from the region has been used as an inspired lighting feature.
The spa will feature a floatation room, a Hammam, individual treatment rooms dedicated to specialist therapies such as Ayurveda and colour therapy and colonic hydrotherapy; five multi-functional single treatment rooms, an Oriental room, a Cave room as well as a Kids Spa.
Other facilities include a Salt room, a swimming pool, a variety of relaxation rooms, a juice bar, a gym and a studio for Yoga, Pilates and Aerobics. The Kids Spa will feature a swimming pool, a salt area and a spa menu focusing on specialised children’s treatments under parental guidance.
The Six Senses Spa will offer a wide range of Six Senses signature and locally-inspired treatments, Asian and Ayurvedic therapies as well as beauty treatments. In addition, there will be specialist results-driven programmes such as detox, weight-loss and fitness, supported through workshops and individual consultations.

About The Alpina Gstaad
The Alpina Gstaad is set on five acres in Oberbort, the exclusive hilltop area of the village which is in Saanenland in the heart of the Bernese Alps. Part of a $337 million luxury development which includes private chalets and apartments, The Alpina Gstaad is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Swiss architecture incorporating local materials and authentic Alpine style.
Blocks of Ringgenberg limestone, the rich brown stone from local quarries; hundred-year-old fir wood, gathered from old Alpine farm houses, and natural slate have been used in the construction. Huge windows allow for plenty of natural light and offer views of the surrounding mountains.
The Alpina Gstaad will have two restaurants, in addition to MEGU, featuring traditional Swiss and international cuisines, a bar and lounge, a wine-tasting room, a private cinema, a cigar room, a ballroom and several boardrooms. The 21,500-square-foot Six Sense Spa will include a fitness center and an 82-foot lap pool. A large outdoor swimming pool will be set in the gardens. The 56 spacious rooms and suites – all with balconies – range from 333 square feet to 4,305 square feet.
