Las Vegas Sands Corp is in discussions with the Singapore government to tweak the design of the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort and expects to start construction by the end of this year, senior vice president of Asian development Stephen Weaver said.
'Since the design was approved, we have been working through with the Singapore Tourism Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to refine the design,' Weaver told reporters on the sidelines of the 2006 ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) Asia Expo.
'In general, it is a question of refining it for better utility for tenants and for users,' Weaver said.
There have been a series of meetings and another series later this month to look at issues such as internal layout to improve traffic flows, creating more interest along the facade of building and adding entry points, he said.
While Weaver declined to give an exact date to start construction of the project, he said, 'We know we want to be in the ground this year.'
'We have to start to put in the foundations because the critical path to getting it open in 2009 says we have to start piling for the hotel towers,' he said.
Las Vegas Sands won the rights to build Singapore's first casino and integrated resort, which will include three hotel towers, 1.2 mln square feet of meeting space, over 300 meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 52,000 people and 800,000 square meters of retail space.
Weaver said there is already keen interest from MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) players and foreign retailers to be involved in the project when it opens.
Las Vegas sands is 'confident' of meeting the 2009 completion deadline for the integrated resort, he said.
