The hotel’s most popular room remains the iconic Room 606, which is kept exactly as originally designed by Arne Jacobsen. Now, Radisson Blu Royal Hotel pays tribute to its creator by re-designing Room 506 together with Spanish designer, Jaime Hayon.
When the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (then SAS Royal Hotel), opened in 1960, it was in many ways a first. It was the first skyscraper in Copenhagen. It was the first hotel of the now global hotel chain Radisson Blu. And not least, it was the world’s first design hotel.
The visionary behind the hotel, legendary Danish designer Arne Jacobsen, designed the now iconic hotel and everything in it: from the facade to the hotel bathrooms and from the cutlery used in the hotel restaurant to the now equally legendary furniture, such as the Egg, the Swan and the Drop chairs. While the hotel has undergone several changes since, one room, number 606, remains exactly as Jacobsen designed it in 1960. In recognition of its creator, Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Copenhagen is now redesigning Room 506 in tribute to Arne Jacobsen in collaboration with Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, the acclaimed artist to re-launch the Drop Chair.

To this day, one of our most popular rooms is still number 606, which is kept entirely in its timeless design. With Jaime Hayon’s wonderful re-creation of the Drop Chair, which we have had the pleasure of housing for more than 50 years, we thought it was essential to extend this tribute to Arne Jacobsen by giving room 506 to Hayon to re-design in Jacobsen’s legendary style. At the same time, Room 506 gives our guests yet another possibility of a hotel stay with an unparalleled high-end design experience and a celebration of Scandinavian heritage,” says Roy Al Kappenberger, General Manager of Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Copenhagen.
Roy Al Kappenberger, the General Manager since 2008, is a legend on his own. He is son to Alberto Kappenberger, the first General Manager of the hotel for 26 years. Roy Al Kappenberger lived with his family on the 20th floor of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel and he started his career as an hotelier at an early age of 5 as piccolo.
It was Roy Kappenberger’s father who commissioned Arne Jacobsen to design the hotel and they worked together during the four year construction phase.
Hayon follows in the footsteps of his main inspirationWhile many of Jacobsen’s designs have been selling successfully and are widely celebrated worldwide, the Drop Chair was made exclusively for the hotel in 1960 and never put into production. In the spring of 2014, however, Danish design powerhouse Republic of Fritz Hansen re-launched the Drop Chair in new contemporary colours in collaboration with the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who is famous for finding his inspiration in the works of Arne Jacobsen. Born in Madrid, Spain, Hayon’s designs have always exuded the same timeless and simplistic style. And following his respectful contemporary adaption of the chair, the popular Spaniard was chosen to pay tribute to his architectural idol by re-designing room 506 – directly beneath iconic Room 606.
“The aesthetic of Arne Jacobsen is one of the greatest inspirations for my designs, so when I got the opportunity to redesign his iconic Drop Chair to accompany my Analog table, I was very honoured. But I feel that with Room 506, I have been given the most unique chance to step in his footsteps and give my own contribution to the world’s first design hotel, which stands as a testament to his design ideas. So I am very proud to be a part of this,” says Jaime Hayon.

The new Room 506 is revealed today by Roy Al Kappenberger and Jaime Hayon, and will soon be open for reservations. Like its iconic upstairs neighbour, Room 606, the room will be open for guests to come and stay.
