This year’s theme is meant to get to the production of mock-ups and follow-up of their complete production:
“Aubusson tapestry weaves fashion: luxury garment and accessories design”. With this call for projects, the Cité de la tapisserie is willing to embody the « tapestry spirit » that inhabits fashion shows. Since the 2010’s, the classic french tapestry iconography flourishes in the collections of fashion designers: large leaves of the « verdures » of the XVIth century, neoclassic roses and peonies of the XVIIIth century.
However, among the « tapestry-like » printed fabrics, the velvets and the insertions of needlepoint canvas, only a few pieces use the original technique of basse lisse loom tapestry as it is used in Aubusson (this know-how was added on the representative list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009) – Discover the Cité’s Pinterest board « Esprit tapisserie ».
The 2015 call for creation aims to bring the « tapestry trend » further, by helping the connexion between the world of fashion and the art of Aubusson tapestry, with both its traditional/luxury and contemporary aspects.
The call for projects is conducted through 3 phases :- At stage 1, general call for project proposals with submissions of application dossiers from artists wishing to compete.
- At the end of the first phase, 15 artists will be selected to carry on with their project during the second stage, by creating a mock-up, acquired by the Cité de la tapisserie and allowing one or several weavings in Aubusson. 7 proposals will be rewarded: The winners of the 1st, 2d et 3rd prizes will earn 15.000 € including tax, 10.000 € including tax and 7.000 € including tax respectively. The winners of the 4th to 7th prizes will earn 5.000 € including tax each. The candidates ending with no prize will receive a compensation of 500 € including tax.
- The last stage is the production phase : each artist the project-management of the production of his mock-up(s). Only the prizewinners N°1, N°2 and N°3 will be able to see their mock-ups completed at scale 1, unless otherwise instructed by the President of the Mixed Syndicate of the Cité de la tapisserie.
Date and deadline for receipt of applications: Tuesday 1 September 2015 at 5 pm
Candidates should submit their applications in the form of a sealed bid, on the envelope of which should be written:
