This September, in the dense mangrove vegetation of Tulum, a secret retreat is ready to welcome discerning adventurers and respite-seekers worldwide. Nestled amongst a swaying sea of lush emerald palms, the Tulum Treehouse is a private home located a stone’s throw from the heart of Tulum—yet it is a fortuitous jungle setting near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve that sets this experience apart. Here, a five-bedroom house has been created by local craftspeople in collaboration with an international design team, collectively putting sustainability above all. Large common areas, several spacious wrap-around terraces, multiple spaces for indoor-outdoor living, and five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms make up this exclusive, full-service jungle escape. www.designhotels.com/tulum-treehouse

The Idea

Located on Tulum's most lively stretch on the main beach road yet set in the secluded jungle, the white concrete house enveloped by verdant foliage is bringing a new offering of tranquility to the enigmatic scene. “We were sparked by the desire to develop new hospitality models which embody the lifestyle of today’s nomads. Those seeking genuine and innovative experiences centered around the respect and appreciation of local traditions, food, music, and rituals. Simply said, the true connectors to the people and culture of any given destination, says Juan Pablo Heredia, partner of the Tulum Treehouse.

An exercise in collective creativity, the the team behind the project assembled regional artisans, architects, builders, and international creatives to bring the private home to life. “After years in the region, learning about the local craftspeople talent, it was our idea to pair them with international design knowledge and aesthetics to create a one-of-a-kind reinterpretation of jungle living, says Heredia of the core inspiration for the project.

The Makers

The Tulum-based, full-service architecture studio Co-Lab Design Office has taken the natural beauty of the Yucatan as primary inspiration, conscious not only to preserve and protect the bio-dynamically rich environment, but to also create a stay deeply connected to the natural world. This means an abundance of locally sourced natural materials like Tzalam wood and handcrafted finishes render rooms built around views of nature, gentle breezes, light and shadows, to create new compositions and relationships.

Bringing a global aesthetic to the project, interior designer and stylist Annabell Kutucu has collaborated with Co-Lab, imparting her singular sensibilities for organic earthiness. Upcycled furniture from Jorge and Rita, a local family of carpenters, handwoven baskets by Rosalinda, individually crafted Oaxacan ceramics by La Chicharra, and textiles by Mexican label Caravana sit in harmony against a polished concrete canvas. Light and air flow through tranquil rooms appointed with Oaxacan rugs and bespoke furnishings by Meridian artisans or sourced from Mexico City’s weekend antique market. Amenities are a labor of love by Lolita Lolita, a Tulum-based all-natural line specializing in organic skin care, body oils, hair care, and other aromatic products such as candles and love potions. Looking to the region’s health rituals and fertile biodiversity and inspired by recipes handed down from grandmother to mother to daughter, Lolita Lolita relies on indigenous natural ingredients like aloe vera, chile, peppermint, rosemary, and honey to create unique tonics devoted to robust health of body, mind, and spirit.

New perspectives

Catering to new ways friends and family are traveling together, one where the intimacy of a private home meets the full-service levels of a high-end hotel, the Tulum Treehouse is the culmination of a new breed of compelling hospitality experiences. Through a flexible design concept, the house can be rented with only the three bedrooms, or as a five-bedroom accommodation, additionally encompassing the two-bedroom ground-level garden floor. Large common areas abound, indoor and outdoors seamlessly merge throughout, relaxing hammocks and outdoor showers invite guests to connect to the treetops, and full kitchens offer self-catering or private chef hire options. Most spectacularly, a impressive 12-person rooftop dining table looks out onto views of endless jungle.

At the heart of the Tulum Treehouse is a core ethos of community, to live in symbiotically with the surrounding environment, and to educate guests on this fine balance. With this mindset, the Treehouse relies on a full solar setup with a back-up generator, as well as a two-pronged water treatment and irrigation system to help preserve the fragile ecosystem that is the Tulum jungle and mangrove area. Taken as a whole, this haven is a place to change the pace of life, to reset, to create space, nurture silence, and reconnect.
