We welcome you to download the app and join us on an inspirational tour.”Design blends historic tributes with Bawa’s modernist styleGeoffrey Bawa, the father of Tropical Modernist architecture, began designing the resort in 1995. The main building highlights his signature aesthetic of sunlit, breezy structures at one with their surroundings. As it was, the resort was to be one of his final projects: following his illness and passing away, the project lay dormant for 15 years until one of his protégés, Channa Daswatte, completed his vision, which is fittingly only a few minutes away from Bawa’s homestead, Lunuganga. Bawa’s aesthetic also inspires the resort library – modelled on his personal study – where furnishings designed by him are arranged to create a particularly Bawa-style interior.
The Anantara Kalutara guests see today is almost exactly as Bawa envisioned it. Function and form are experimented with to create airy, open spaces designed for the tropics. An original masterpiece, Anantara Kalutara joins the many revered Bawa works around Sri Lanka that have come to define the nation.
