KAI, Hoshino Resorts' onsen ryokan brand with 23 properties across Japan, will open KAI Miyajima in the Miyajima area of Hiroshima Prefecture in summer 2026. This marks Hoshino Resorts' first venture into Hiroshima Prefecture.

Strategically located with views of the Great Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine, all guest rooms offer spectacular ocean views of the Seto Inland Sea, and the public hot spring provides an experience akin to being immersed in the sea.

Furthermore, KAI Miyajima will reintroduce the "Setouchi Ancient Sauna", a traditional bathing method long practiced in the Setouchi region, offering a unique stay that deeply connects guests with the local culture and history.

Features of KAI Miyajima

1. All Ocean-View Guest Rooms Overlooking Miyajima
Every guest room at KAI Miyajima boasts ocean views overlooking Miyajima. From the long sofa by the window, guests can admire the serene Seto Inland Sea and the beautiful scenery created by its many islands. The guest room curtains, sofas, and chairs incorporate colors inspired by the blue of the Seto Inland Sea, designing a space that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

2. Public Hot Spring on the Top Floor with Both Ocean and Mountain Views
The public hot spring at KAI Miyajima is located on the top floor of the ryokan, offering two distinct bathing experiences: an Outdoor hot spring facing south with sea views, and an indoor bath facing north with mountain views. The Outdoor hot spring is designed to create a sense of unity between the Seto Inland Sea and the bath, providing an open and liberating experience as if immersed in the sea. The indoor bath features two types of tubs: an "atsu-yu" (hot bath) to warm the body to the core, and a "nuru-yu" (lukewarm bath) for a more leisurely soak, allowing guests to relax both mind and body according to their preference.

3. The "Setouchi Ancient Sauna" – A Local Tradition Revived for the Modern Age
KAI Miyajima will undertake the endeavor of reintroducing the "Setouchi Ancient Sauna" (a dome-shaped stone sauna), a bathing custom long cherished in Setouchi, for the modern era. Originating in the Kamakura period, the stone sauna was once widespread in this region but is now rarely seen. To offer a glimpse into the vibrant culture nurtured by Setouchi as well as the wisdom born from people's daily lives through the ancient sauna, we have decided to recreate it in a way that meets contemporary relaxation needs, based on research into existing stone saunas and historical documents.

Key Design Elements of KAI Miyajima's "Setouchi Ancient Sauna":

  • Radiant Heat Bathing Experience: Radiant heat from the floor, walls, and ceiling ensures minimal temperature variations, allowing for use at a higher temperature and lower humidity than typical saunas. The uniform temperature maintained even at foot level makes it comfortable to warm up while sitting on the floor.
  • A Space for Calming Mind and Body: A dimly lit, tranquil environment where guests can relax their mind and body on a mat laid on the floor.
  • Located Closest to the Sea: In homage to the historical stone sauna that were built at the water's edge, this one will be positioned at the closest point to the sea within the property. A distinctive feature is the entrance, which requires guests to stoop and crawl through.
