Luxury meets purpose in South Africa’s Great Karoo
This summer, Samara is making the journey as seamless as the safari. Guests booking four nights or more will enjoy complimentary flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, plus return transfers to the reserve — ensuring a smooth start to an unforgettable adventure.
Samara’s newly launched all-inclusive luxury safari pairs exclusivity with impact. Guests can expect game drives in a magical Karoo landscape, cheetah tracking on foot, bush walks, San rock art, children’s programmes, Spekboom planting, and community-led storytelling — with every meal, picnic, and sundowner included.
“Samara is more than a safari,” says co-founder Sarah Tompkins. “It’s a journey into the soul of the Karoo, where every stay helps rewild landscapes, protect and enhance biodiversity, and empower local communities.”
Refashioning of Samara’s uber-luxe family safari villa The Manor
Samara’s 4-bedroom exclusive-use villa The Manor is currently being reimagined, with renovations set for completion by Autumn 2025. The refreshed interiors will feature sumptuous fabrics, handpicked artworks, and bespoke décor inspired by local artisanal traditions found in the Karoo.
Guests can look forward to new additions including a state-of-the-art gym with sweeping wilderness views and an upgraded indigenous garden, carefully landscaped to attract birds and pollinators while enhancing the villa’s sense of place.
Designed as an exclusive-use retreat, The Manor provides the ultimate multi-generational safari escape for families and friends. Perfect for milestone celebrations — from anniversaries to birthdays and private gatherings — the villa offers lush gardens, a serene infinity pool, a dedicated team of staff, and a private safari vehicle for tailored game drives across the vast Great Karoo.
Wellness in the Wilderness: Samara to Open a Bush Spa by December 2025
Guests enjoying the serenity of Samara’s vast and wild landscapes will find additional relaxation at Samara’s new spa, part of the Karoo Lodge facilities.
Tucked along a winding footpath in the beauty of the indigenous bush, the intimate treatment room features African-chic décor and can be fully opened to the outdoors, allowing guests to unwind to the soundtrack of birdsong and the whisper of the breeze. A shaded deck overlooks a waterhole and the magnificent Milk River Valley, where spa-goers may even spot wildlife while enjoying an African foot reflexology massage.
The spa menu will include a range of treatments — from massages, aromatherapy, and body exfoliations to nourishing wraps and beauty therapies — all using Healing Earth products, a South African brand renowned for its sustainable, nature-based approach.
A Major New Attraction Nearby: Karoo Origins Fossil Centre
Just beyond Samara, the historic town of Graaff-Reinet has unveiled the Karoo Origins Fossil Centre - home to the world’s largest public collection of fossils from the Karoo, including over 850 specimens, many unique to the region and found nowhere else on Earth.
Curated by renowned palaeontologist Professor Bruce Rubidge, the collection includes more than 107 holotypes dating back 260–250 million years, when mammal-like reptiles roamed the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Beyond its museum-grade displays, the centre doubles as a working research hub on the Karoo Supergroup rock formations, one of the world’s richest fossil-bearing deposits.
With immersive exhibits, life-size recreations, and stories of pioneering fossil hunters like Sidney Rubidge and James Kitching, the centre delivers a unique visitor experience rooted in scientific heritage. It also positions the Karoo as a scientific and tourism frontier for learning about mass extinctions and the early evolution of vertebrate life.
Rates: ZAR 20,230 / ca. EUR 1130 ppn sharing on all-inclusive basis (luxury suite, all meals + drinks, daily game drives, bush walks and conservation activities); 2-night minimum stay. 4-night stays include return flights from Cape Town / Johannesburg + road transfers to Samara
